I think this post is ok???? I'm just concerned about the welfare of some folks in the Buck Family of Knives who are in Southern, CA. Buck family members that may still live there, Wilde Bill Cody, Leroy Remer and other past employees. Did the old factory in Cajon survive?

some of our folks were displaced from their homes, as of today the old plant was ok and the employees still working for Buck were OK will keep poeple posted if we hear anything from ex employees as they are still part of our family and word spreads fast if anyone is in need. As of Tuesday afternoon (yesterday), Leroy and Wilde Bill were fine. They both live a bit away from the areas directly impacted by the wildfires.

My daughter and her family live in the San Diego area. The fires are in the eastern portion of the city and county. The problem with the other areas is due to Santa Anna conditions where the winds are blowing from east to west out of the desert blowing the smoke into town. The schools have closed due to air quality issues and she is home watching my two grandsons. Other than that the real danger is with the homes in the hills east of town.

I just heard from Jane Davy, Buck's executive secretary and all around sweet heart. She says her home is not in danger right now but the air quality is pretty bad.
If the fire is traveling basically east to west with the santa ana winds, the old Buck plant should be safe since the fire would have to burn lenghtwise across an airport to get there.

Hi all. An update on the San Diego situation. Still lots of fire, smoke and ash. Nasty air as well. Been working at Qualcomm Stadium doing whatever the folks down there need. Been using my 110 and 277 to open boxes, cases of water, whatever. Even used my 110 to cut up chicked to prepare for cooking. What I have seen of the people of San Diego, both volunteers, officials and the evacuees, it makes me proud to be a San Diegan. Over 500,000 folks were evacuated with many of them being allowed to return home today. I retired recently from the County of San Diego Office of Emergency Services and went thru the fires in 2003. This is much worse. In 2003, we went into recovery mode after a little more than a week. This is going to take a lot longer. I spoke to Mr. Wright of Wrights Knives tonight and he has been in touch with many of the folks from Buck who are still down here and everyone is doing OK (or as well as can be expected considering the circumstances), Where I live here in San Diego, we are like an island in the midst of all this chaos. Fire to the north, east and south. But nothing here. We consider ourselves very lucky indeed. What we need, besides more manpower and assets is prayer. Lots and lots of prayer. Prayer for the safety of the firefighters, both on the ground and in the air, and prayers for the family and friends of those who have lost everything, and especially, prayers for the families and friends of those three souls who perished in these fires. And thanks to the Buck community for their concerns. This is another reason I am proud to say "I own Buck knives."

Well written and heart warming story, especially with your volunteer efforts at the Stadium - even using a couple of Bucks. I salute your personal efforts. When I asked about the Cajon facility in an earlier post, I should have also asked about the three previous facilities. Are they still in existence? Perhaps the old one on Federal Blvd. is being used by another company. Good luck in the days and months ahead.

I'm sure Joe could answer you on that one (the old facilities). I do know for a fact that the old huts down in Old Town are long gone. Too bad, they could have made them into historical buildings and maybe a Buck museum. And thanks for the good words, but if I may, there are hundreds, maybe even thousands, of volunteers who just felt the need to do something for those who were suffering. Like I said in my earlier post, from what I saw, made me proud to call San Diego my home.

First of all, I want to thank all of you for your prayers and good wishes. The fires are finally close to being fully contained. Two are still burning with a ways to go. Over 1500 homes lost or damaged, over 300,000 (maybe up to 400,000 by now) acres burned. About a dozen or so folks lost their lives, and about 50 firefighters injured. But we are slowly getting our lives back to some order. The Qualcomm stadium evacuation has ended (the Chargers played a heck of a game Sunday), and I am back to being a retired Buck collector. Nothing new in that arena as yet as we are still cleaning up all the ash and soot from around here. All the family are OK. Once again, THANKS!!
