I have purchased an esee 6 knife and i mailed it to my friend who will be come back here in the philippines. is it safe to bring the knife inside the checkin luggage going to the airport? the knife will be securely on its sheath and will be wrap with paper inside the luggage. aside from this i have read that it is safe to bring a knife as long as it is inside the checked-in luggage.

can anyone share some information.

I've never one had a problem flying with knives, and I travel a lot. Others have been unlucky with sticky fingered airline employees, though.

It is legal and I carry knives internationally all the time like that. Don't just leave the knife in plain sight though. Someone handling the bag could choose to steal it. I don't believe it is common at all and it has never happened to me but I always tuck the knives away where a person would really have to spend some time digging through the bag to find it. I often put them inside pants pockets.

thanks! but my friend is from sanfrancisco. so there should be no problem with the knife properly secured inside the checkin luggage bag going to the airport right?

it's perfectly legal to have a knife in your check-in luggage in the U.S at least... but be sure you know that for wherever you are travelling (or your friend) I have had airport employees (TSA) question me on having a knife in my check bags as if they were going to take them or I wasn't allowed. I was allowed and politely told them that was the case so I don't know why this is an issue, but they had no answer. These people aren't the worlds most well trained people and can sometimes be mistaken so just know your rights/privelages.

I travel internationally with knives in my check-in luggage and have never had a problem either entering another country or entering the U.S.. The only thing you need to be careful of is that the particular knife or knives do not violate possession laws in that country as to type, blade length etc, because if checked by customs it can be confiscated.

This. It is legal to own such a knife in California and to reasonably transport it elsewhere, and TSA doesn't care about knives in checked luggage, so assuming airline policy doesn't have a thing against checking knives (no airline I know does), there's nothing to be concerned about when leaving.

On the other side, the person with the suitcase will have to clear customs with bag in hand; if he's searched for some reason, and Philippine law takes issue with it (I don't know Philippine law, but with as much rainforest as they have, I can't imagine it being a weapon by itself), he might have problems there.

Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer in either California (although I'm from there, and familiar with its laws) or the Philippines. I study international law in the Netherlands and travel internationally quite frequently, always with knives.

San Francisco does not have anything to do with your question....and yes, you can travel with knives in your luggage...

No problem, I always travel out of here with my knife roll in checked luggage with no issues. Just don't wrap it in anything flashy or expensive looking for customs on the other side.
