Hi,

next week a friend of mine is going to San Francisco.

Where are the knife and gear shops (preferably with name and exact address)?

I want a big bag of goodies brought home to Germany...

Thank you!!!

i went to SF recently to visit my sister and her husband and i wandered over to pier 39. there is a knife shop there. extremely expensive. i have knives that i bought for 155ish that they are asking 230 for. so i dont recommend visiting there.

Does San Francisco Gun Exchange still exist? They had a great selection of knives.

Are the people of San Francisco still allowed to own knives? I'm surprised. ;) Someone could poke their eye out.

The SF Gun Exchange is long gone. The only gun shop that I know of that is still within the city is High Bridge Arms. It used to owned by Bob Chow.

Thanks so far. If I had known Tad Gear was there I wouldn't have asked ;-) This will be expensive.

What about other cool shops? Seems that Levi's Jeans are dirt cheap in San Francisco.

Is there anything to consider when you buy a knife and carry it around the city while sightseeing? I mean laws and crap... :-)

I figured as much. I moved away from the Bay Area in 1991. Whew!

When I'm in the bay area I always try to make time for Hida Tool (1333 San Pablo Ave., 510-524-3700) in Berkeley and The Japan Woodworker (1731 Clement Ave., 800-537-7820) in Alameda. Apart from marking and carving knives, chisels, plane irons and such for woodworking, both carry some very nice hand forged kitchen knives

many of the online retailers will also ship to a different address than your home address, so if you know where you're staying, you might try ordering online and having them ship to your hotel or address you'll be staying at in SF.

depending on your length of stay you might need to speed up the shipping process, but it might give you more options.
