Hey folks, just came back from the San Jose meet which proved to be both relaxing and intense in an rather humid environment. Vito's was okay, knife nuts ate a well balanced diet of protein, carbs, and fat (pizza) followed by classic protein supplements (beer) and energy drinks (soda). Fellow forumites JCHH and Steve "The Iron Chef" used a smart strategy of short bursts of eating and browsing the knives. :D

Got to meet some new and old faces and some old and familiar knives.
Many knives in attendance were but silently, the most common knives were

DA MT LCC
REKAT Sifu #1 and it's D2 and multi colored spawn in red, green, and CF
Spydercards and Toads (almost like a Biblical plague)
An invasion of Strider tanks, eh GB folders which can double as fistloads for NFL and NBA atheletes and are bigger than a pistol magazine.
A pack of Mad Dogs
A large dab of Mayo (the only kind of mayo that has no calories and gets better with time)
Various size HI Kukris and a katana
Various autos

Other outstanding knives were
MT CFO (if a Shaquille O'Neal needed an auto it would be this) and Option 2 (smoother than Spydercard but I still wouldn't stab
with it).
The Talmadge Tactical Kitchen Knife, smaller than I thought but very versatile.
The Jim March Outsider which is nearly the same size.
The Crawford/Worden Wortac, smooth as the KFF with a grip that melts in your hand. If I win the lotto...
CRKT Companion and Bear Claw, nice feel on both. Sheaths…well go see Normark for that.
Spyderco Military and Police, still sexy after all these years
CRKT Ryan 7, nice and broad like the Companion. It is like a folding bolo than a barong.
The Spyderco Chinook and Strider GB were more like a folding barongs and krises. I'm waiting for a folding Kampilan or broadsword, it'll be interesting who makes that. :)
AG Russells folders, very nice overall. I'd say it was eclectic in appearance.
Carson F4, subtle and nice. I'd like to throw one. :)
DDR Custom Arclite, very nice.
Long knives/swords/boot daggers ala E. Mayer and J. Hossom

Livesay WA-1 and Walkabout sticks, I liked the Walkabout's heft and it created deep resonance than the WA1 when I accidentally hit a parking meter or three. :D

JSP Bandando, very very wide when open seriously.

KerUUK, easily one of most eye catching pieces and underrated till it's in your hand. Honestly, it's for folks who wish they could carry a pinuti, or a talibon (a northern Filipino Bolo, not the Middle Eastern government structure) I see the KerUUK (which I couldn't pronounce) as a beefier extension of the Perrin Jaws line.
I would get it with the g10 or micarta.

Perrin La Griffe 4" blade, nice as always a smoother feeling grip than the EKI. Interestingly, I saw this as a good companion to a Griffith Sniper nearby.

I do regret not bringing everything I had but I was glad to talk to everyone at least once, especially the lurkers. I found that Eda Koppo had more keychain toys than keys and Steve Harvey and I have similar tastes in short knives.

For those who couldn't make it, we missed ya.

Oh yeah, I brought a BM CQC 7, a Comtech Stinger, and medium Batangas Balisong that scared a passerby. But that's another story :)

Hey Smoke!

I had a good time meeting everyone face to face! Lots of fun, sharp, pointy toys there as well! Jim, that "Outsider" is outlandishly bada$$! Great design on both the blade and the carry system. We'll all be waiting to hear from you after your ccw court date. I was able to control my drooling, admiring Randy's collection of customs that he brought. Joe, you did a great job interfacing with Vito's for us all. It was good meeting up with Eda-Koppo again, since the Marc MacYoung seminar last year. He brought lots of round and pointy things to enable you and disable bg's! Steve just had to bring some of the nicest looking swords--yes Steve, 30+inches is a bit too much for a knife, even if it does have traps on it! I even got to blink from a Surefire Dominator 10X. 500 lumen is bright even when reflected off of a hand! That's the next bright thing I have to get! I had fun meeting you all.

Hank:cool:

Agreed--a very cool way to spend time, although a couple of the collections made my factory batch seem a bit the poor cousin--at least I had people scratching their heads at my ATAX!

Hank, the Dominator was a fun toy and seemed user friendly. That Infinity Light (?) was pretty bright though it looked like a mouse for an IMac. There was enough tritium and keychain lights to have a light show actually a magic show, since there was always one knife left in someone's trunk that they forgot.

The Bill Siegle piece I saw was nice, probably could split a cow lengthwise and skin it right after. The Spyderco Vesuvius looked a bit small for a compression lock. I was surprised nobody had a Spyderco Mouse or any Wegner. The Natives in G-10 are nice but it's one of my love/hate knives. Love the blade but hate the handle.

Another subtle occurrence was the small batch of custom neck knives and camp knives, a good reminder that customs can be used. Also there was a large investment in carrying cases which could be another area of discussion.

eda, yeah, the KerUUK and ATAX (aka "the ax thing with the handle and numbers") caught a lot of eyes especially the sheaths. BTW, how many people did you nerve pinch? :p

Your collection (which was impressive) made me realize that all of us have and are going through our own individual knife phases. I have nothing against the factory pieces, there are some I still really like. It's the craving for quality that makes us grow or spoils us and some of the higher end pieces really reflected good craftsmanship.

Guys,

For all those that made it to "Vito's" for the Pizza and Knives fest....Thanks a bunch!

It was nice to meet you all! Thanks again for coming, and thanks for bringing all your wonderful knives as well! :D

I just hope Joe didn't get stiffed on the bill! So, "If you owe, you know"...lol

I was a little surprised at what I saw as a general disinterest in fixed blades, but as a "Fixed" guy in a "Folding" world, that shoulda come as no real surprise... :p

E_wok, enjoy the Mad Dog buddy, it was a good fit for you, and a good deal for both of us.

Speaking of Mad Dog's, for Steve and Lewis, thanks for bringing yours guys, you helped me make some choices that are gonna save me some money down the road...thanks again!

Jim and Joe, it was really nice meeting you two, I look forward to hooking up with you guys again in the near future, and spending more time listening and learning from you both...a real pleasure! :)

Nifrand, nice collection, and thanks for the laughs buddy. You're a very impressive man, and I hope we always stay on the same side of the fence...

A special note of thanks to the ladies that came to the dinner, beautiful women all. You all really brightened up the event!

For the rest of you guys, thanks for making us feel at home! For all my outgoing ways, I'm still kinda shy around strangers...I think I'll be a bit more relaxed at the next one!

Looking forward to seeing you guys at BladeWest, and if not, I'm sure you'll see my better half at the BAKCA show...if you do see her, make sure to say hi.....she was really impressed with you guys, and seemed to like you all... ;)

Disclaimer: Please pass this email on to anyone that was there that's not on the email list, and I'll post it over at BFC as well.

Anyhoo, thanks again, YOU guys made it fun, and it was nice meeting you all! :D

Stay Sharp,

Mel

Ok, What, no comments on my modified Cold Steel "Recon Scout" with the shapened false edge...."Dudes, c'mon!"

(I left this out of my original post, but I've just got to say it...)

I met some really nice folks up at Vito's, more than a few, that stated they read these forums, but they lurk, and don't post...

Guys, c'mon, you all were some of the nicest, most level headed folks there...please, (and this is for all those "good folk" that read but don't post), these forums would be so much richer with your input...

No one likes taking hits, but YOU could make this a better place for all of us, if you would only post here as well! Please, do post, help US make it better...ok? Please.

Always a great time. I didn't get stiffed on the bill, no worries :)

Too many highlights to mention. Almost everything knifrand brings is awesome (not to mention his bootleg TTKKs :) ). Got to see a Surefire 10X dominator, Microtech credit card knife (Option II), bunch of nice Randalls. Steve's Hossom sword is amazing, first Hossom I've ever handled, and I'm pretty sure I'll be getting one of his 3V fighters one of these days, based on how that sword handled!

Joe
