San Mai folder?

Hi guys! I recently got a Tojiro Zen 9" chef's knife with a San Mai blade. I didn't know about San Mai until I got it and now I am really interested in it. I saw that Spyderco made a Caly 3.5 carbon fiber with a blade that looks really similar to the San Mai steel. So I started wondering if there are any other folders that have San Mai blades? Is there a different term used for three layered steel other than San Mai?

It's also called laminated steel and the Caly 3.5 CF's blade qualifies as such.

The only other pocket knives (not necessarily a locking folder) that have laminated blades that I can think of are the Kanekoma Higonokami and the Mikihisa Folding Kiridashi.

Mcusta Yoroi San Mai Knife made in Seki, Japan.

Oops SG2 on the JYD. Kershaw Wild Turkey and Double Cross that are advertised as Damascus is actually laminated so those two as well.

Let's not forget the Moki made Fallkniven range of laminated steel folders!

Here's their latest release in Cobalt steel, the Gentleman's Pocket Knife.

The pouch is from KSF.

In addition to Spyderco's Caly and Caly 3.5 laminated ZDP 189 steel knives Spyderco has Endura laminated blades with super blue ( non stainless edge with stainless edges) out currently and they are a very good price for an excellent product. Discontinued Caly Jr's, and Jess Horn laminated ZDP 189 stainless knives come up on the buy/sell forum occasionally and are pretty highly regarded for their light weight slicing abilities due to the thin blades.

Their all excellent knives. In the future there will be releases of laminated Delicas, Stretch, and maybe Dragonfly? All the Super Blue laminates are FRN and not Carbon Fiber so the price is much lower. The Caly Jr's and Jess Horns were also FRN but their price has appreciated since their release some and they don't last long when they are for sale.

For laminated blade folders I have the Kershaw Junkyard Dog SG2, Fallkniven GP, Spyderco Caly3 and Mcusta Yoroi. My Fallkniven F1 fixed blade also has a laminated blade. Anyway, I can post pictures of them if you want especially close ups of the blade.

There's also Kershaw Blur SG2 laminated blade which I don't have.

I think the Kershaw Double Cross and Kershaw Wild Turkey are both considered Damascus rather than San Mai. I have these and they're quite nice and inexpensive.

Off hand I believe the Higo No Kami is in San Mai. And I believe Rough Rider put out a knife in San Mai, as well as edtched Damascus so a quick search may pull up either so you may have to dig a little deeper so you know what your looking at.

Pictures would be awesome! Thank you!

The new Spyderco Endura Super Blue sprint run is San Mai blade construction. I'm getting one.

The Sog Vulcan has a San Mai (VG-10 Core laminated with 420J2) version.

While they are considered Damascus they are not actually Damascus. They have a VG-1 core that is sandwiched by 16 layers of alternating high and low carbon steel very similar to your Mcusta.

I did not know that. I think I might go for one of those.

The first picture gives you a size perspective (top to bottom with blade length in parentheses): Kershaw Junkyard Dog SG2 (3.75"), Fallkniven GP (3"), Spyderco Caly 3 (3"), Kershaw Wild Turkey Damascus (3.125"), Kershaw Double Cross 2-Blade Damascus (2.625" & 2.125") and Mcusta Yoroi San Mai (2.75").
