Sand in an Axis lock anyone?

Hi, I went canoing last weekend and we had to camp out on a sand bank. I thought it was pretty cool, until I tried to open my mini-grip that night and it made a horrible scratching, grinding noise.

I eventually cleaned it out, but I was wondering if anyone has had any major problems with sand in an axis lock, because I love my BMs, but I also like canoing and camping out on beaches.

There is a video of a Grip that gets used as a shovel and thrashed and sand was not something that was a problem.

I've taken a 440C mini-Grip to the ocean, laid on the beach, and taken it underwater with no ill effects to lock, blade, or handle. I make sure it gets rinsed in fresh water whenever I have the opportunity and it's been fine. I also use AXIS knives on our camping/hiking trips in mountain settings and I've had no problem there either.

I clean them before we go and give the blades and locks a fresh coating of Tuff-Glide before and after, but that's the only special treatment they get.

I've hiked axis locks through 21 miles of mud and quicksand without any problem as well as plenty of other sandy hikes and camps.

Nary a problem.

Same here - my mini grip spent the last two weekends at the beach, no problem with the sand.

I use a dry, teflon/pfte based lube when bringing my knives or guns anywhere that heavy ( or light) oils or greases will trap sand, dust or grit. Before these new wonder lubes I used simple powder graphite. It's dirty, but it works and doesn't trap grit in the action/bearing/pivot. Joe

When mine gets gunky every so often I blow the lock and pivot area out with compressed air and then rinse it out with some WD-40 before wiping it down and oiling the whole assembly. It feels same as new after that.
