Sander vs Hand Files

I am interested in getting into knive making and was wondering if it would be better to invest in a $150 belt sander or to buy hand files. I have a fair amount of experience on a sander sanding wood. I am also fairly sure that knive making will be a hobby that I stay with.
 
get a few files, GOOD sandpaper and look up draw filing.
Enjoy your new addiction :D
