Thinking about getting a cheaper sander and wanted to know thoughts. 600.00 is out of the question. Around 200.00 is doable and Ive seen threads on the 180.00 craftsman but was wondering about dayton. There is a 200.00 1/3 hp,belt sfpm 4400,3.5 amp,2x42 and 1x42 and disk sander which I don't really care about. Or for 225.00 a 1/2hp 5 amp sfpm 1800, no disk and it only 1x42 and not sure how I feel about that. Any thoughts on these?

I bought the sear's 2"x42" five years ago and it's still going strong... and the little disk sander has proved valuable also. The downside is a fairly steep (at least for me) learning curve due to the very high belt speed, and a little tweaking needed to get the best out of the machine. All said, I'd do it again.

Good luck.

Have a disk sander which is why it didn't matter to me. Did you do any of the youtube mods to it?

I use a 2x48" Kalamazoo belt sander purchased from Enco. I bought it because I have years of using the same one at work under my belt, and they have never let me down. Belts are still plenty easy to source. I'm debating making it variable speed with a VFD, if so I might source a slightly smaller drive wheel to bring the torque up at a slightly lower speed, and using the ability to overdrive the frequency 50% if I need more speed.

Here's mine.

What hp is the baldor?

Theres the eastwood 2x28 but can't find much on it. The 2x48 kalamazoo is out of the price range. some of the 1x48 are close.

Baldor motor is 1/2hp. These run $410 in their hot deals catalog, and if you sign up for their email specials they offer offer 15-20% off, sometimes with free shipping.

If it is truly out of your price range at around $330 then I would recommend the craftsman.

I have heard great things about Kalamazoo 1x42 from blade sharpeners

Im open to other thoughts but will look into that one. Waiting on some money owed me and might be able to squeeze 330.00

any chance you could make one?

A two wheel grinder is pretty easy and nice and you could probably make one for $300 that would be real nice...just a thought and some of what I said depends on what you can do and source.

Not sure if I want to tackle making one yet. Do you do everything on the 2" or is a 1" good to have around? I can get a used but good condition craftsman 1x30" 1/2 hp locally. Don't think its made any more so can't find what a good price is.

Heck man, I'd say save for another month or so and get this nice Jet. http://www.amazon.com/J-41002-2-Inc...047&sr=8-1&keywords=jet+2x42+belt+disc+sander The Jet 2"x42" with an 8" disc sander looks and sounds like its a really solid machine, and with a few adjustments could be all you need for a longto to make great knives with! And the 8" disc size is almost perfect, most high dollar disc grinders knifemakers use are 9". With this 8" disc, you can use some good quality Rhynowet sandepaper in 9x11" sheets to make your own discs using any grit you want (from 80-2000 grit) using 3M fethering adhesive. Also, by using that adhesive, it allows you to take off each grit and put on a different one easily, and you can stilll re-use the first one you had on, therefore it saves time and money changing grits. (See video below for info on what I'm talking about) Not to mention you get free shipping... And I like how it comes with nice SOLID work rests for both the belt and the disc, that both tilt, making things like swedges easy to grind etc. This is what I would get If I was looking for a belt/ disc combo when first starting out, that's If I had to do it all over again. Also, it seems a lot of knifemakers use this machine, some even say so in the comment section.. Anyway, that's one idea, take it for what it's worth :)

Here's the vid I mentioned above:
