A kothimora with an all metal 'box' style scabbard with ivory grips all around and only 13". It was given to the military school at Sandhurst in 1954 by the CinC of the Nepali Army, Gen. Kiran Shamsher Jang. For a gift it is surprisingly of medicre quality although the engraving on the scabbard is quite good. The silver plating is thin and deteriorating.

John,

This is an interesting knife. I would have thought that a presentation khukuri might carry an inscription on its blade, in addition to whatever has been done with the sheath. Also, if you look at the bolsters, the main blade no longer has the silver plating found on the other knives. Perhaps, the Karda and chakma have silver bolsters while the khukuri has a brass boster; making it a very odd presentation set.

Made in 1954. I doubt there was a conscious thought in copying anything. I have learned from the Gurkhas that we tend to overthink and analyze 'styles' and date of manufacture too much (at least as it applies to 20th c kukris). As they say, "It's just a knife".

I have not seen any pattern when it comes to inscribing a kothimora. More often the inscription is on the scabbard. The brass bolster on this was never plated while the k&c are made of silver sheet. For a presentation piece to such a symbolic place as Sandhurst there seems to be less attention to detail than found on others.

Note the general's cypher on the locket. It is in Roman letters.
