I haven't got my coote yet, I am sure it will be a week or so yet. I need to get some belts but I kind of blew it all on the grinder. Has anyone used those AO or Zirconia belts the seller barbkat sells on ebay? Would it hurt to buy some of those to get me started and then buy better belts later? Or should I just order a few better belts now? Another thing is I would hate to just waste expensive belts right off the bat just learning. Suggestions?
Thanks,
Ric

Oh yea, I know the subject has been beat to death in the past but I am having trouble finding it now. What grits should I start with? Maybe a selection of 80-220-400? 60-120-220-400?
Thanks!

I use AO belts. I did not buy them from barbkat, but I will soon. I bought some from discountabrahsives on ebay. I bought 40 and 220 grit. Nextime i am going to buy 60, 120, 240, 320.

I tried some of the expensive belts and did not really see much of a difference, but that was before getting my vfd. So I was running everthing at 6000 SFPM, now I run at around 2000 SFPM with the bigger grits.

I would personally start out with the cheap ones until you know which grits you want and then try some of the high dollar stuff.:)

I've been buying a/o belts from GL Pearce Abrasives for years now. Great belts at a great price. Their number is 18009380021
I bought some of Barbkat's belts and they just didn't work for me. I've read posts from other forumites that love em but for some reason I can't get em to work for squat. I still have a box full of em. You're welcome to em Ric, just cover the shipping.

expensive belts end up being the cheapest ones you can buy!

you can take that to the bank!!!

60 220 400 and maybe a few 600 or 800 and you are good to go.

Thanks Tom! I am sure I will agree with you. I tend to want to get the very best I can. L6 is going to hook me up with some belts to get me started and maybe that will get me by a couple weeks till I can afford to order some good belts. I plan on trying several different brands of belts as money permits. Like I told L6 though, this will really suck if I am sitting here with a grinder that I have been waiting over two years to get and don't have any belts to use it!!! :D

norton ceramic and norax for steel. and hermes a/o and s/c super flex for wood/micarta are my first choices. you will find you own combo after a year or so.

Tom,hit the nail on the head.and Rhino has the right belt combo
With a 967 Cermaic 80 I can grind out more than one knife with the same belt.I have tried the cheaper route whe I got my first belts
and they did not last.but if mike is getting you started than go with what you have at the time. That is a nice thing for Mike to do
Everyone has to start some were.Good luck and post some pictures
of your work.:)

I buy mine from discountabrasives on ebay too they have good prices and selection pretty cheap shipping too.
