Sanding G-10 scales

I have a FB knife with G10 scales on it and they are rather smooth. What recommendations would you guys have to roughen the texure without screwing things up ? But this , I mean what grits sandpaper , how coarse to go , etc. I've never worked with G-10 before , and am not sure of it's sanding characteristics , but very familiar with abrasives.
Also wondering, can it be brought back to original shine and smoothness if desired?
Thanks for any advice guys :o

It works the other way around my friend. The more you sand the smoother it will get. :(

Yep, Chuck's right. You're either going to have to machine or cut texture into the scales to get more grip. You can always file in a random pattern for a large grooved texture, or you can rough sand and then sandblast them for a little bit of grip, but still not too much.

dremel burr, respirator mask, ........ start dimpling the surface by touching the burr to the surface lightly , move it randomly all over the place. dimple, lift, move, dimple , lift , ove etc

240 grit will give you a little grip. Wet sand only. G10 is very bad for you.
BTW, guys-you can sand coarser or finer.

Be sure to wet sand as Bill DeShivs says.

Or you can wear gloves, long sleeve, Respirator, Safety glasses and work on it with a file or Dremel

Thanks a lot for the replies fellas. Wow , some important new info I wasn't aware of. Gets smoother with sanding , Eh? Even with coarser grits like 100/120? Gonna have to think about this for a bit before I do anything.
++ on the respirator idea. Any resin-impregnated stuff is bad to inhale.

Add: The sand blast idea is appealing. Bring it to a shop that does that I suppose. They would mask the blade off then hit it with grit. I wonder how coarse they can go with that. Very intriguing idea. I like that better than the Dremel idea because it would be a consistent finish all over the handle.

Of course it doesn't get smoother when sanded witha coarser grit!

If I may make a recommendation...

Buy yourself a slab of G-10 (do a search lots of places sell it...and it is relatively cheap). Play around with that first.

There are so many little details that you can not really give via text...and destroying a chunk of low value G-10 will teach you MAGNITUDES.

For example, if you wet sand it (which is a great idea) it will look MUCH different when it drys...then you spray it with oil or WD-40 and it darkens back up.

Just some free advice...
