Sanding G10/ avoiding the liners

I'm planning on smoothing the G10 on my super blue caly 3. I know the health risks and the precautions I have to take. I'm wet sanding it outside to avoid dust but I'm also covering my nose and mouth.

How can I avoid scuffing the liners as I go? Should I just sand and polish them along with the G10? Maybe only polish the flat sections of the scales and avoid the edges?
Is there a certain point where I'll lose any textured Micarta-like appearance? I'd like to keep the checkered appearance but get it smooth to the touch.

Thanks for any help, sorry for the list of questions. I'd love any tips or suggestions.
I'll come back to check this later.
