sanding G10 concern

I decided to smooth the G10 scale on a new knife this morning, so the pocket clip would work better. I remembered breathing the dust from it was a bad thing, but I had read somewhere that you could do your sanding under running water in your sink. So I turned on the faucet and let water pour on the handle scale while I worked on it a bit with a fine file and then some 800 grit wet and dry paper. Admiring my work, the hypochondriac in me started nagging, and now I'm wondering if the running water thing really works. Should I have been wearing a respirator in spite of the water? Did I just breathe highly carcinogenic dust? I know a lot of you guys have some experience with doing things like this, any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You fine, it all went down the drain.
