hello again,

thanks for the info down below ill probably get a 1" x 42 0r 30 inch sander to shape scales and sharpening.

I have one more question , is a 1" belt sander /grinder with a 8 or 5 inch sanding disc capable of "Plaining" a scale down before mounting on a knife or do I need a wider sander like say a 4 x 36 that lies flat .

wondering if ill need both . ive been using an inverted portable belt sander to plain down and shape but I need to get real again.

many thanks "John"

The 1 inch belt is too narrow for my liking in sanding down scale thickness, especially for finish work. It is too likely to cut ripples in the scale surface. Get a 2 X 72 if you can now. That can do all your steel and scale work as far as grinding goes.
