Sandpaper for Sharpmaker

Hello all. I'm trying to avoid buying the diamond stones for my Sharpmaker. I need something with a higher grit than the medium, brown stones for reprofiling and rebeveling (it takes too long). I'm aware of people using sandpaper wrapped around the sticks.
So my question is, what sandpaper do you use? Is there a certain type/brand?
What grit(s) work best?

Thanks a ton.

I use wet/dry starting at 220 and working up to about 400. I think I've got 3M brand, but I'm not really brand shopping. I think wet/dry makers are probably about the same, so I just get it when I can.

I started out using binder clips to secure the paper, but now I'm using small hand spring clips from Harbor Freight

So any wet/dry paper will work? The 220 to 400 grit will rebevel the edge enough for the medium stones to take over or should I go higher than 400 before moving to the medium stones?

Here is a grittabel to give you an idea:

So from 400 grit sandpaper to the medium stones should be ok.

Wow! Thats a pretty useful chart, Maarten. Thank You!

And thanks to everyone else for your help.

bh42, no I haven't seen those yet. Looks Interesting.

Does this sloppy fit make them impossible to use or greatly change the sharpening angle?

I tried the Congress stones once. I had to shim them in the slots to make them work. It worked ok, but it was a pain in the but to set them up every time. I just use the wet/dry sandpaper method now instead.

emory cloth works better than sandpaper, holds up better and doesnt shed the sand as bad as paper.

i simply use emory cloth & a couple of small rubber bands, and imho it works about as well as the diamod rods at 1/50th the cost.
