This weekend I'm planning to make three sandpaper mousepad sharpeners. I have sandpaper in the following grits: 400, 600, 800, 1000, and 2000. I figure to use the 400 grt for coarse, 600 for medium and 800 for final honing. I'm mainly going to use these and a burnisher for convex sharpening and maintainance. I'm open to suggestions and advice on whether other grit combinations would be more suitable. I remember Yvsa mentioning 150-200 grit for a good working edge, but my khukuris are already fairly sharp so I figure that 400 would be the coarsest that I need.

400 is usually the coarsest I use. 600 is the stuff I use most often. Way to go on rigging up the sharpeners. If I had listened to Yvsa and some of the other folks here and done what you are doing first I would have saved myself a lot of frustration trying to sharpen stuff when I first got my khukuris.

In fact I have to credit HERE with helping me get stuff sharper than ever before. That may be an even greater benefit if being here than finding the khukuris, although they have been put to a lot of use.
