Sandpaper/mousepad convex, ruin blade finish?

I've seen videos of the mousepad/sandpaper convex technique, where the whole blade is laid flat on the sandpaper, and swiped across, same as a stone, but with the whole blade side in contact with the sandpaper. Doesn't this look like crap? Wouldn't the blade finish be scratched and irregular, or does it polish away with ultra fine grit paper?

there no way you can do anything to an edge if the whole side of the blade is catching the sandpaper.

If you use the mousepad sandpaper technique with a true fully convexed blade, yes the initial scratches/scoring will go quite a ways up from the edge.

BUT, if you do it right, and progress through to the finer grits then finish with a leather strop, the end result is a BEAUTIFUL mirror like polish on the entire edge of your blade.

Looks great since any scratches get sanded/smoothed right out by the time you're finished!

Don't hold the knife flat. You need a bit of an angle and the mouse pad being soft rolls with the edge so to speak. It takes practice and keeping a consistent angle. That is why I don't use convex edged knives except on fixed blades. keepem sharp

It does not really matter, your using sandpaper, you can have what ever finish you want.

I went up the whole side of this blade then finished polished the edge, if you do it right it looks like a factory belt finish.
