So I am moving into the realm of convexing. I am working up a old fashioned razor strop...already have an oak bench strop with leather surfaces, on with green compound, the other plain leather.

So, the razon strop. Has anybody affixed fine grit sandpaper...along the lines of the mousepad method or the slack belt grinder method...to a conventional, flexible strop of fabric or leather?

If you're going for a convexed edge and want a strop ANY leather that is affixed to a piece of wood will work, but the thing that works THE BEST is Horse Butt hanging strops with either diamond past, strop dressing (what barbers use), or bare. If you have a wood paddle strop you can get large strips of sandpaper for sharpening then you can lay them over the strop pull them tight then staple/ affix them to the wood. This will give you a nice convex edge. If you have a belt sander you don't to affix the sandpaper to anything just get a sandpaper belt (as high as possible) put it on your belt sander, give it some slack, and sharpen away!
