Sandpaper to polish blade edge?

The title asks the questions. After I am done sharpening my knives on my stones, I take a piece of 1500 grit wet-or-dry sandpaper I have affixed to a flat surface and use it to polish the edge I have just sharpened. It seems to make the blade cut more smoothly. Does anyone else do this or something similar?

Sure I either use the scary sharp system from HandAmerican or the 3000 and 4000 grit paper with my edge pro system.

I use a jeweler's hand lap, which is basically a flat piece of wood covered with 4/0 grade abrasive paper. 4/0 is about 2000 grit. Anything finer seems to be overkill. I have an extremely fine synthetic ruby stone that will literally mirror polish, but stopped using it years ago.
