Sandpaper - which kind?

Hi all:

I read that "Sandpaper Sharpening" thread posted sometime ago and so I'm interested in give it a try. But, my local stores seem only sell Aluminum Oxide sand papers. I have to say that even the 3M Aluminum Oxide 2000 grit sandpaper doesn't feel as smooth as the white sticks that come with the Sharpmaker.

So my question is:

Does it need to be Silicon Carbide sandpaper to make it work?

I intend to put the sandpaper onto the Sharpmaker stick and it should work, should it?

Thanks!

emory cloth works better than paper imho, though paper will work. i used just std el cheapo paper when i used it. but the cloth works better and lasts longer too.

Keep in mind however that emery cloth does'nt work for wet sharpening unless labled otherwise. The abrasive will come off of the backing if used wet.

I've never used it sharpening, but these products really do work better than regular sandpaper. Home Depot by me has a good selection.

3M Wet-or-Dry paper is most commonly used for sandpaper sharpening. It is silicon carbide. Here is a condensed version of the "Scary Sharp Method" for sharpening the blade of a carpenter's plane.
