Sandpaper with EdgePro

Hello,

Just curious if anyone has tried using wet/dry sandpaper with the EdgePro system. I am about to buy an Apex with its default stones, and I'm considering using an EZE-LAP diamond for coarse and high grit sandpaper for finishing. Anyone have experience trying to use sandpaper adhered to an EdgePro blank? Is this idea even worth exploring?

Thx,
JZ

JZ,

I tried a variety of sandpapers with my Edge Pro and got mixed results. The primary problem was that it wore out too fast. The Edge Pro geometry is such that the center line of what every abrasive you are using gets the most wear. With wear concentrated in a relatively small line, sandpaper wears out quickly.

Currently I seldom go past the coarse grey stone that Ben provides. This stone profiles quickly and gives a nice edge with micro-serations which I find to be a good working edge for every day use.

I also recommend cleaning up with a leather strop charged with green chromium oxide.

Thanks for the info. I've been tinkering with strips of emory paper adhered to paint stirrers (with small blocks of scrap wood glued to the back of each stirrer). The block allows me to put the stick in a small bench vice at the angle I want. I then run the knife vertically (perpendicular to table top) along the angled abraisve.

So far it works okay, but I'm not sure if it is worth pursuing rather than just buying a the EdgePro.

If you call Ben Dale and talk really nice, and mention my name and how great and lovely I am, he might sell you a diamond stone mounted on the aluminum fixture like all his other stones.

He says it works wet or dry (I have little experience with mine yet) and there is a rapid wear factor and a slight expense.

But let's face it. With these new super steels, sometimes you just need something that will cut.

I had to straighten the bevel on my Strider AR when it was new, no biggie, just a cosmetic thing, and the 180 and 220 worked just fine.
