Sandvik 14C28N vs ELMAX

1. Depends on how you use your knife.
2. Depends on your sharpening ability to meet those use.
3. Elmax is more wear resistant.
4. 14C28N is easier to sharpen.
5. Both are pretty stain less.

The Sandvik is the "regular" steel option on the Blur.
The Elmax is an "upgrade", so if that's an option, I would go Elmax.

Elmax is a much harder steel (will hold an edge longer) and is also much more expensive

I prefer 14C28N and other softer steels simply because they're easier to sharpen

But since you're looking for a steel with high edge retention, Elmax blows 14C28N out of the water from what I understand

Everyone else covered the hardness vs. ease of sharpening, but one other thing that you might have missed is that the Elmax versions are flat-ground, as opposed to the standard hollow grind. Personally, I prefer the flat grind, but that's actually more due to the aesthetics than the actual cutting performance.

Elmax really is a tough steel. I've been cutting all sorts of things with my two Elmax bladed knives and once it's sharp it stays that way for a while. I enjoy using them and they clean up quickly on my strop (diamond compounds).

If the price difference isn't a deal breaker I'd do with the better steel

To me, Sandvik is a great steel as well. KAI has it right more or less... ZT's aimed towards hard use, the tough Elmax is beneficial. Sandvik on the Kershaws are totally fine. Excellent slicers.

I generally prefer the Sandvick stainless steels to other stainless, but if you don't have any Elmax and want to try it, this is a good chance.

Def the elmax version, they are gorgeous and wont be around long. You can get a Sandvik Blur anytime.

My experiences with 14C28N have been sub par to my original expectations. Imo its very close to 8CR13MOV. I actually just had a salvo rust in my pocket last night at work. Edge retention hasn't been noticeably different. Sharpening was equally easy. Elmax is a hyped up steel that isn't exactly easy to get right. There have been some big brands burning it to the point that you end up with a near worthless blade. All in all though I'd probably go Elmax.
