Anyone here have any experience with Sandvik 19C27 steel?

How does it compare to ATS-34 and CPM 154 in terms of grinding and finishing? Mirror polishing?

How about performance? Which one takes the best edge? Which one holds it the longest?

In my experience, CPM 154 takes a better edge and finishes easier/ better than ATS-34. But I haven't used any 19C27 yet. Any info would be really appreciated!

By the way, I recently made some kitchen knives from Sandvik 13C26 (purchased from Admiral Steel) and had Paul Bos heat treat them to HRC 58, man they're sharp!! This steel takes a really nice edge. It also surprised me in that I expected it to be real easy to grind, but I found it harder to grind, band saw and finish than Bohler's D2. If 13C26 was this difficult to grind, then I wouldn't want to work with 19C27.

I got a bar of it and made 2 knives so far. I ground easy and worked fine. Takes a great edge. After it is hardened and tempered it was extremely hard to finish grinding and fine polish. I will shine up nice just hard to get all the little scratches sanded out. Unfortunately I have never used the other 2 steels.

Well we have two rare experiences here. 13C26 is much easier to finish than D2, and 19C27 isn't all that difficult either. 13C26 is extremely easy to finish.

Well I was going for a mirror polish and got it. I am just used to working with steels like 10xx and 5160 and found the hardened 19c27 harder to finish sanding than those. I got it done just used up some paper on the job.

larrin im betting thats its just more of what they are used to working with

to me that steel might seem like warm butter on the belts that and what works great for "simple" steels some times needs changed for stainless
