My friend bought a kershaw mini-cyclone recently and within the first week of owning the knife little rust spots started to show up along the blade. He bought it from a dealer so it wasnt second hand and the knife never even got wet. Has anyone else had an experience like this? should he send it back to kershaw? Is this even covered? any help or advice is appreciated

I've had minor rust spots on my blades before. I was able to get rid of them by just sharpening them out, and I prevented future rust by applying some mineral oil to the knife.

You don't have to send it back to Kershaw. Some minor spots can easily be taken care of at home. Just make sure your friend protects his blades in the future with some oil or lubricant.

Stainless steel is only stain resistant, It will rust in most cses if exposed to the proper conditions. If he carried it in his pocket regularly his persperation may have been the culprit. I've had AUS-8 rust due persperation.

he carried it to work to an office and it was less then a week old ........ it barely cut anything and never got wet...... i know even stainless steel can stain and have spots but this just seems like some sort of fluke...... id like to know if anyone else has had similar problems with sandvik?

Salts and acids will will spot Sandvik. Your skin contains both, as do many other things. Use a little dab of metal polish on a rag or paper towel, apply elbow grease, and it will rub out. Then put some type of protection on the blade. Mineral oil is cheap and works well but there are easily a dozen or more products that will protect the blade. All of your blades should have some type of corrosion protection applied, as there are very few steels that will not spot or stain given the chance.

I don't have any of the sandviks yet, but I've carried several knives IWB. I've only seen rust on one of them. It was a Benchmade and the rust was on the screws for the axis lock. I just put some honing oil on a tooth brush and it came off. I usually wipe my knives with the same cloth that I use to wipe excess honing oil away. It puts a coating on them that doesn't affect anything else. If you're going to use the knife for cutting food stuffs, use mineral oil like the others suggested.

I have had light rust spots appear "out of nowhere" on several of my knives that had just been sitting in a drawer. I live in San Francisco so perhaps fog is to blame. For my EDC, I carry a Spyderco Pacific Salt and I find that the H-1 steel performes as well as any other I've tried for cutting while remaining absolutely corrosion free no matter what I throw at it. This makes me more willing to use the knife as well. I'm not sure why there haven't been more companies encorporating H-1 into their designs as judging by the prices it does not seem like a very costly material.

I have an E.T. with sandvik. I've had it about a year now. I only EDCed it for about 2 weeks but I didn't have any rust spots pop up...but then again as many have mentioned..I keep all my knife blades with a dab of protection on them either after I sharpen them are when I put them up with my collection.
