Welp this is my first post here.
So I made a sanmai knife and I’m havin some trouble with the finish. I have gotten the acid etch and coffee etch pretty good, but it seems to be weak. I mean it gets scratch super easy.
Just wondering if any of y’all have experienced this and how ya fixed it.

Welcome Max.

Acid etching is just surface patina - it WILL scratch easily.

Since you say you have made a sanmai blade, then the etching will be even less durable as it is less hardened steel on the outside of your blade (the full hardened steel is the middle core of the blade, assuming you did it correctly).

You will not be able to get any kind of durable/permanent coating with just an acid etch.

You would need to coat your blade in order to get the durability I think you are looking for (DLC, Cerakote, etc.)
