well, OK, it wasn't The Fat Man himself, it was my sweetie, santa's Designated Elf
smile.gif

mr. elf took me to Wright Knife last night, and asked me to pick out something--yes, i know: this man is an ANGEL!!!! can you believe it? i almost can't!

i had in mind one of the smaller fishtail oak william henrys, or maybe one of the carbon fibers...but once i picked up the little pearl handled "kestrel", it was all over, love at first sight, no contest....

this is the sweetest knife i have even seen. the pearl scales are as irridescent as a rainbow; the action is so smooth it's hypnotic, and the titanium liners and spacers in the one i chose are such beautiful colours that we spend half our time staring into the knife!

all the seams are perfect. the sound when you open and close it is almost musical. the liners are a vibrant sky blue, and the spacers are an amazing shade of bright purple. and the blade is realllllllyyy sharp (nope, haven't cut myself yet!). i love the shape of the blade, and it's already been used to help open christmas cards, take tags off christmas clothing, and slice christmas ribbon! this is the most useful jewelry i've ever owned.

i want to post a scan of it, but i'm informed that i have Christms Chores to do and i'd better get going...

later, i promise!

i hope all of you are as lucky as i am, especially in love, for of course love's the most important gift of all, now and year 'round. without the love with which it was given, well, even this beautiful little knife wouldn't be half the pleasure it is to me...

a big thank you goes to Dennis Wright, for all his kind help...i guess we made HIS holiday a little brighter, too!

and of course, to my special elf: thank you, darlin' !!

Congratulations Silverwing! You know that I tried to convince Sweetie to get you a Daniel Winkler belt knife to go out dancing in, but that little knife sounds really gorgeous too. I think doing things like that falls under the Saintly Clause of Relationships with Loved Ones Contract. Enjoy your knife and Happy Holidays!

Hiya Silverwingie!!

Ya know, I think I was the only guy ever to publicly gripe about the Kestrel, but it sounds like the perfect knife for you.especially with the pearl/purple motif!

Uh oh... I just had a Lyza Minelli/Babs Streisand craving!

Do you think that your "Santa" could take me out shopping if I bought a new dress or somethin'? I know that I can't hold a candle to you (Damn this extra chromasome!) but I really wanna be bought nifty knives!!!

Don't worry, I wouldn't make a move on him... unless he's prone to wearing ballerina shoes and a hardhat, that is.
I mean, how could ya resist an outfit like THAT?

ANYways, when your chores am finished, please post a picture of your new friend. I fell in love with the Kestrel when I first saw a picture of it (just got disappointed at its Liliputionistical size) and the added pretties added to yours sound like a real one of a kind, drool like an idiot, bark like a duck kinda fun thing!

Have a Happy Christmas, Merry Hanukkah, Kwazy Kwanza and Rambling Ramadan!

Dippping fleas, I remain,

Boy, sounds like you and Carl are a match made in heaven!

I hope you both enjoy your new toys and have a safe & happy holiday. We're glad we could be a small part of it.

Stay sharp!

made my day. thanks, stjames...

Dr. Lathe: as for the knife's hypnotic effect, yeah, if only we could quantify that special "wow" factor that some of these shiny toys have! we could include that in reviews: "i give this knife a full five WOWs!"

Paracelsus: have a link to pics of that Winkler belt knife?

Vampie: it's OK if you griped about the kestrel! everyone's entitled to their opinion, and no knife is perfect for everyone (except maybe the sebenza and the speedtech!).

and as for this....

...Gerbillina, you crack me up!

now, just in case i had him pegged totally wrong, i checked with Sir Carl (so OK, now the word's out, yep, Sir Sweetie is none other than BF's own Carl Jacobsen, he of the Cigarette Smoking Alien Black Helicopters! whoohoo!) and, um, he said he'd, uh, have to "gracefully decline" the kind suggestion to take you knife shopping. i didn't quite catch everything he said, cuz he was kinda...on the floor, you know, rolling around...tears streaming, holding his sides like they was hurtin' him...hard to hear what he was saying thru all that ruckus, and i think he's OK now, but he mumbled something about his "heart not being able to take the sight of your new dress" or something to that effect...

not sure what he means by that, i was always under the impression he was a pretty strong guy, but he seems to think there's a public health hazard involved there somewhere. i dunno, maybe i misheard him.

but he did say that no one makes ballerina shoes in his size. he does own a hardhat, but it's only for emergencies. i told him i thought a date with VG just might qualify, but that only started more rollin' around on the floor, holdin' his sides...

as for the scan of my baby, well, apparently either my scanner or my technique sucks, because i've been trying and trying, and so far, nothing shows up the liners and the spacers like i want it to! i'll keep trying...

Waxes: hee hee, OK, so you have the magick touch, kinda appropriate for the Horde Leader...sooooo....what's your next wish gonna be?

Jim: "match made in heaven" perhaps, but ya know, forged right here in the fires of good ol' earth

and being tempered to a fine edge, we hope...yeah, we had a great holiday!

kinda fun to be away for a couple of days and see all your shining sigs on my thread! i hope y'all are as lucky as i am, and i see from the other "what i got for christmas" thread that indeed, some of you are just as fortunate as i, in knives and in love...

thanks for all the lovely posts, y'all!

You know that everyone is going to call you Silverwing Kestrel from now on, don't you? James is right, it is poetry. You should use that as your Terrible Ironic Horde name. Glad to hear you had a nice Christmas and are in love. I'm suprised to hear that Sweetie is a cigarette smoking alien, however. That sounds a whole lot different from what I had imagined from your posts in the Horde threads.

I don't have a scanner, so I can't show you pictures of my knives. But Daniel Winkler can be reached at winklerd@boone.net and Ms. Shook, sheath maker extraordinaire, at kshook@boone.net. They are very nice people. Ms. Shook sent me their 1999 catalog (nothing for sale, just examples of great work) very promptly when I asked. Daniel is my favorite knifemaker by far. His work combines great artistry, whimsy, and function. You might also like his neck knives. He has a wait list now of several months or more to order directly. I got into custom knives after see some of his pieces several years ago, and skipped right past production knives. Rich MacDonald is also making very similar forged knives in primitive patterns. Rob Hudson's work is also a favorite of mine.

You can see knives for sale at the Nordic Knives web site: www.nordicknives.com The pictures are small, and they only update the site every two to three months, so things you see might be long gone. Ask to be put on their mailing list. You'll be able to see knives about two weeks before the web site gets updated. They have three to six of Daniels knives in any every catalog. But they seem to sell All of them pretty quickly. I know Daniel goes to the Nordic Knives show every year. I think it is April. Check the web site. Solvang isn't too far for you and Carl to drive up the coast for a romantic weekend and go to the show. It's on the coast North of Santa Barbara, and South of Santa Maria and San Luis Obispo (SLO town, where I grew up). Check it out.

Happy Holidays SilverWing Kestrel!

To Silverwing:

Merry Christmas and congratulations on your new folding friend. She sounds beautiful as does your poetic description of her.

You well know than one of your chores is posting up a pic of Ms. Purple-Pearl Kestral. Don't worry if your image is not up to the quality level of Mr. Mattis. He is a tough act to follow. If James didn't have a real day job I'm sure he would set out to be the Weyer of digital knife photos.

Happy Holidays to All,

David Bloch

Congrats on that sweet knife!
I love the Mother of Pearl, I have the Lancet model and it's a stress relief thing staring into the colours and texture hidden under the smooth surface!

PS
The spacer colour on mine is a light sea green colour, compliments the MOP very nicely!
