I had gotten Shun Kramers for my girlfriend, sadly they left with her. The Kramers were the direct precursors of the Reserves and were also SG2. They were pretty incredible. The SG2 seemed to hold an edge considerably longer than anything else in my kitchen (VG10 stuff I have doesn't even come close), and rarely needed touching up. Out of the box they were ridiculously sharp. They are very thin and really seem to go through stuff effortlessly. I did actually get a Reserve 7" Santoku to replace the Kramer, but I haven't really gotten a chance to use it. The changes they made to the design do seem like improvements (handle is a bit more comfortable for me). Again, insanely sharp out of the box, and so thin you can barely see the bevels. Fit and finish are excellent, and the blade is beautiful.
I think the Reserve Santoku and Paring knife would be an excellent choice and would cover the majority of things you'd need a knife for in the kitchen. Add in a stout knife for heavy work and you'd be set.
