SAR 3 concerns

I ordered a SAR 3 from the Company Store and received it today. It is a beautiful knife and I love it, but I am a little concerned about something. Shouldn't this knife be razor sharp? I am having a hard time making clean smooth cuts through paper. I just received a RAT3 yesterday and did the same paper test and it is a huge difference. The RAT 3 makes effortless clean cut. Should the SAR 3 be the same? This is my first Busse purchase and I expected this thing to be my best EDC blade. What do you guys suggest I do. Sharpen it or call Busse about it?

Busse will gladly fix any issues you may have with the knife. I have a couple Sar 3's and they came scary sharp from busse. I guess some slip through the cracks sometimes.

Send it in my friend. We will make it scream!

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Busse will take very good care of you.

Don't hesitate to contact them.:thumbup:

Jerry:

I sent you an email with similar concerns. Feel free to contact me. Thank you.

Where do I send it to for edge work?

I would just sharpen it my self.

Busse will take care of you, but that said, I would rather just hit the edge my self, and not send it in.

Welcome to the fold!

I have seen a number of these and also the post where Jerry said that he was dropping the hammer of this and it was due to new folks on the sharpening line. This is all well and good, so what do the little orange QC stickers mean?? If anything! Do the QC folks not check for sharpness, finish and fitting and other stuff. The question is not that there were inexpereinced folks on the line but those working in QC - those SAR3s should never have gone pass QC in the first place.

If indeed some 'sliped through' the SAR3s are more than 'some' so the issue is with QC or lack of it.

And nobody should have to return a knife at the cost of a Busse for rework and sharpening.

A big concern I always have is the knife getting "lost" along the way when you have to ship back and forth.

What angle do they typically sharpen these at? My sharpmaker doesn't get near the edge at the 40 setting. I'm sure there's a thread explaining best practices for sharpening these?

From the big guy's site:

Sharpening
INFI's high level of chip resistance also makes it the easiest steel to resharpen by hand that we have ever encountered. I personally fall into the category of "hand sharpening challenged". I've heard tales of those who can sharpen ball peen hammers to a razor's edge on an Arkansas stone in less than 5 seconds flat. My experiences have always been to the contrary. The spine of the knife is usually sharper than the edge when I'm finished applying my magic stone sharpening technique. One of the great features of INFI is that simply stropping away from the edge (the way a barber strops a straight edged razor) on a ceramic stick is basically all that is required to resharpen INFI. Since you're not chipping steel off the edge there is no need to grind any steel away. This feature of INFI will, likewise, allow you to keep the same overall profile of the knife for a much greater period of time.

I got a dud as well. Send it to the address on the Busse Combat website and they will take care of you. If I had a grinder I would have tried it but I feel uncomfortable fixing a brand new knife. That is not to say that I don't start messing with the edges as soon as I get a new knife. Having said that, these SAR3's are off more than spydie stone territory.

This is an admitting problem and the Boss is taking care of it. Maybe they can just send a CABS back instead when the get mine. I didnt really care about my issue except that I sent the knife with a friend hunting after braging about all of my busse knives. He said it was like using a butter knife trying to cut Caribou. He used an El Cheapo to finish the job!!! :(

I was disappointed to say the least. But it is getting straightened out. He saw the BWM my dad just sent and is back in awe of all that is Busse.

I am pleased that Busse is taking care of all the sub-standard SAR3s and so they should - what makes me surprised is why folks think that Busse is somehow doing the people with sub-standard SAR3s a favor - it is an inconvenience to email, phone, package a knife and return it and then wait for it to return again, especially at the price.

There should be an apology to those who got stuck with these sub-standard knives, especially with the build-up to it.

Perhaps Jerry could chip in and tell us what those orange QC stickers mean and what is actually checked at QC - perhaps in future even include a QC tick-off list with every knife so that we know what has been checked.
