my SAR 3 has become my daily carry and is starting to patina and show a few very small rust dots.

what can I use to protect it that won't leave a residue which will cause health concerns. i cut fruit for my kids quite often.

Mineral oil Brendan! Mineral oil, if consumed in large amounts, is a natural laxative; easy on the stomach. However, if you are just coating the exposed steel in mineral oil and it is consumed, you won't be running to the john every 5 minutes and it will be 100% safe for your children. Hope this helps! Its what I use for my beloved Swamp Rats, and I have yet to see a rust spot or any patina on my blades.

WD40... Ive never had anything rust when I keep a blade very lightly coated with wd40. With that being said, I wouldnt ever eat from a blade coated with wd40 though. Mineral gotta be your best shot here I would think. thx for the info as well-might whanna try that myself

Is vegetable oil a good idea also ?

NO!! I have seen it used in the kitchen for a quick fix, and after time it always gets gummy.

Mineral oil does work if you apply it frequently, but you should also consider bees wax. It is not digestible, but it is food-safe, and they put in all those fruits and vegetables. It should last a lot longer than mineral oil.

The local hobby store here sells big blocks of it really cheap, and I have seen it in the grocery store near the canning items, IIRC.

Clove oil is also another option.

Although I am not sure about taste transfer.

You must live some where near the ocean?

I have never had any rust issues on my satins or stripped, even when wet, swimming with them.

Is it a double cut?

After Garth put a sharp edge, I've used my SAR 3 as a daily carry. I normally give it a good drop of rem oil once a week and a few strops of the 1000 grit sand paper and leather strop once every two weeks. Never had an issue with rust and the blade is still razor sharp.

If the SAR 3s had a sharp edge from the start out of production, it would be a more popular knife.
