Sar 3 sharpening question

I have a new Sar 3 and after a few minutes I was able to make it shaving sharp everywhere but the very tip. When I look at the edge the spot near the tip appears thicker than the rest of the edge. Is it just a matter of thinning down the upper edge or am I missing something? Thanks. Btw I use flat stones to do most of my sharpening.
 
Without seeing your particular blade its hard to say if its accidental, or intentional to make the tip more durable.

Either way, the answer is the same. You can either thin the profile to match the rest of the blade and its just going to be less durable, but probably still very tough.. or you simply have to blend and adjust your sharpening angle accordingly. There are many knives around where the profile and geometry of the edge change for various reasons like distal tapers, or simply wanting robustness in certain areas, and keenness in others..

Really the decision is yours based on how you expect to use the tip.. if you want a good scalpel type cutting knife I'd thin it down a bit :) if you see yourself drilling wood and ramming it into logs.. leave it as is.
 
Good point about a thicker tip being more durable, hadn't considered that. I guess I was just concerned that I couldn't get it as sharp as the rest of the blade. After all when you're slicing something isn't the tip the point of entry? Its sharp just not "scary sharp.".
 
The tip is the point of entry, and more obtuse will certainly make it harder if its also dull. However.. I'm sure that if its completely sharp and not dull it will still pierce well..

If you can go into a rubber tire, or bite through 1/8" leather easily then I think the tip is good to go :D

Time for you do to some testing, and photographing, and come back with some results :)

Just recreated your tip cutting video and it went about the same. I'm at work or I would have taken pictures (slow night in the er tonight.) My sar 3 is going to be my edc user so I think its sharp enough if there is such a thing. May try and thin the edge a bit w my diamond stones.

Any ideas or from other SAR 3 owners on how to sharpen the SAR 3. BTW I really like mine which I use as an EDC.

Disregard, I had an inspection 11, which explains all the dullness to my blade and thickness around the tip. I'll just send it back to get it fixed.

Once you get it back from the shop. Sandpaper laying on top of a strop, followed by the use of the strop provides excellent results. Normally just 1000grit sandpaper and stropping creates an excellent edge on infi with my sharpening. if you go up to 1500 grit you get a very fine edge after stropping.

maybe this is a stupid question but can u tell me if there are different sar3s outthere???
mine is definitely NOT convex!!! (are the LE versions convex? I got an SE....)
Can I sharpen a v-edged knife with sandpaper too, just without the mouspad???

Hey Drossel, nice to see a fellow Swiss and SAR 3 owner here :)
I also have the SE and I read somewhere here on the forum that it came with a convex edge, however, mine looked much more like a V edge. Whether it was convex or V, I anyways used my Edge Pro sharpener and reprofiled it with a smaller angle (and V profile).
Am very happy with it now and it is super sharp and easy for me to re sharpen it.
I prefer a V edge on a small blade like the SAR3, ESEE3/Izula, but a convex on a larger blade like my FBM. Just a personal preference..

Just gave my sar3 a closer look and yes, I think theres something convex there....
I prefere v-edges on smaller knives too...
