SAR-4 A humble review

I dont know why or how I waited so long to humor my interest in the SAR4. As many times as I looked at it online, I just couldn't imagine exactly what its size was in reference to other Busse knives I own. Its been aroud a while and I'm sure most of the intrigue has worn off for just about everyone around here... certainly considering blades like the Gladius and B11 are hanging around.

A kind old HOG, 1whobuys, was generous enough to lend me an LE SAR4. My first impression when I took it out of the box was "Whoa!" Its definitely bigger and heavier than I thought. The more I handled it, the more I realized it might just be the perfect size knife I've been looking for, as a camp knife and as a hiking knife.

I really loved that it was smaller than my Skinny ASH but slightly bigger/heavier than my Ratmandu. Almost a perfect combination. My ASH always seems too large to tote around camp, but as quick and convenient as my RMD is, it just doesn't have the heft.

My initial and only complaint was the size of the handle. Solstice's modded SAR4 thread really had me drooling. I'm torn though. Not every knife needs to be a chopper... and I think the lack of chopabilty complaint gets thrown around too much here. However, with the weight and slightly over sized handle of the SAR4, you could really hang back on the handle and whack away at something effectively.

Again, like I said, I'm not telling you guys anything new. I'm the newb. I'm just impressed with how well the SAR4 bridges the gap between an EDC and a larger combat blade like the ash/sfno/sarsquatch. Now I just have to sell something to scrounge up the scratch for one. :D

Yes I thought the same about my SAR 4 in terms of chopping ability for a small knife .... and it is fairly unique on that point .... perhaps it's best feature is bridging the Gap between the two distinct classes ..... a large Res C handle done to the same shape and less weight in the handle so more blade heavy .... but lighter overall .... and I would have kept mine in that spec .... the handle weight was the only issue for me ....

Pretty good review, I haven't had the pleasure to handle a SAR 4 yet, and I look forward to the experience. They're awesome looking knives, especially if they're pumpkin. :D

I have quite a few knives, but always come back to my SAR4

It hits the sweet spot for size/weigh/ergos and the blade is just perfect for all kinds of jobs :)

Thanks for the review.

I have to agree the SAR 4 makes a great all round user whether it is for camp or survival. I have two and they are both keepers. I also reckon the SAR 3 is actually a good companion knife for the SAR 4.

You could cover pretty much any knife related chore with these two knives.

Nice review and i've never handled a Sar-4 but have always admired it classy line and curves and overall appearance. Yes that ones on my list if nothing else just to see for myself. Thanks for sharing and Chuck is an awesome hog for taking care of you like he did.:thumbup:

Thanks for the SAR-4 review - I agree that it comes close to being the "one knife" choice, at least for me, when I head into the woods. When I have two with me, it's likely to be the SAR-8 and a Culti or thin Game Warden. I'm having trouble getting use to the SAR-3, however, as a companion piece.

So how would you compare the Sar4 to the Boss Street???

I couldn't say as I've never held a Boss Street. I'm fairly sure the SAR is heavier and more stout. The BS doesn't have as deep a belly either. Unfortunately due to budget I'm forced to have a collection with almost zero redundancy. That's why I loved the SAR4. Its size and weight are very unique. The BS would be more of a light kitchen/longer EDC for me. Too close to my Vex.

Did you somehow know pumpkin would be my choice? I love the look.

I'm loving the whole (minus the 5) SAR series. I sold a pumpkin SAR 8 and I regret it. It was a beautiful knife. I hope to eventually have a 3,4 and 8 in pumpkin.

The SAR4 reminds me of a 50 cal BMG round if you've ever held one. Its beefy and stout in a fairly small package, but packs a punch. The zero edge convex edge is really robust. I'd encourage anyone on the fence to gibe the SAR4 a try. I just wish this one was mine!! :D

It can be..just drop that 1whoguy a note and work it out ;)

And, My users are a SAR 8, SAR 4, BBSHBM, Jungle Assault and the Chuckette'
Also have a Snow & Neeley Axe that I like.

Just got a SAR 3, pretty tiny for me, waiting for the SAR 20 to come out and complete the set.
