SAR 4 Mod

I love the SAR 4 but I found it somewhat handle-heavy. Also I would like to make it more drop point (this part of the mod is simple), basically I'm making it more like a BAIII. How would you go about reducing the width of the handle on both sides? Is it advisable to remove the handles and slim the steel or just sand the whole thing with the handles installed. I probably won't do it for fear of butchering the knife but how would some of you with more experience would do it?

Something along these lines

just to trim some weight, I would still leave the pommel exposed though, if you needed to bang on the handle I'd rather have some metal instead of hitting Micarta.

Thanks in advance for the ideas.

sanding the micarta isn't going to remove very much weight.

to make a significant difference, i would think tapering the tang and/or shortening the handle would be most effective.

Oh no what I meant was if I had to remove the handle during the modding or sand the steel and Micarta all together

Depends on what your are doing if you are removing the butt then no.

Why dont you just buy a SAR-5 and MOD that?

gotcha.

if you would be using the same grit belt for both, i see no reason in removing the scales.

of course, it may be easier to get a more even grind with them off since they arent flat.

but im not a "modder", so ymmv.

I'd remove em. Hand-fit em later. You'll have to do some work on the scales anyhow to ensure they are rounded right and all.

If your mod is fairly simple, and your really afraid of butchering it, I would say send it in to the custom shop. for a simple handle mod where your just moving the spine and belly inward to make it lighter, or even thinning the back end of the scales a little to make the entire handle package slimmer, that can probably be done in less then 6 months and for less then 150$.

and it will keep the warranty.

As soon as I get my SAR4 SE (the one with the black G10 handles) I'm going to remove the scales and give it a old straight handle treatment (which should reduce the handle weight) and drop the point, basically follow the outline of the SHBA in this picture, except I won't reduce the width of the blade:

There you go! Basically that is it, drop the point some and contour some handle at the last inch or so.

Does work done by Ban and Horton and such void the warranty?

ONLY if their modifications contribute to whatever failure your blade might experience. For example, if someone decides to grind their Battle Mistress primary bevel down to .005" before the edge and then their edge doesn't hold up under heavy abuse then the warranty on that portion of the knife would be void. Other unmodified portions of the knife like the handle, pommel, etc. are still covered.

We can only WARRANT the work that WE do.

Hope that helps,

I think this would be nice , but it will be tough to straigthen that rainbow handle.

I cant wait too see.

I think that you could change the balance more dramatically by skeletonizing the tang.

Jerry, that is good to know. I wanted to send my HH FSH to horton or Ban and have them round the butt a little but was worried that if the blade snapped while batoning it that the knife wouldnt be covered. That is good to know, thanks brother.

To be honest,,,,,,,,, I could imagine a HH FSH's blade snapping during batoning ,,,,,,, even if you thinned the entire blade down to .18 . Noss mutilated a skinnyASH1 and that didn't give up the ghost till he was good and tired of his form of testing!!!!!!!!!! INFI IZ BUILT
