I'm thinking of a SAR 5. I don't see much love for it here. Is there any or is the SAR 4 the way to go?

I prefer the SAR5 to the SAR4 myself. If the SAR5 had either a thinner handle, or a more contoured handle like a fusion magnum handle, it would be perfect. Oh Ducci..... :D

I have both. Right now, my preference is for the SAR4 because of the ergos, weight, balance. I agree with mikeymoto in regards to the SAR5 handle. If it had fusion magnums....it would definitely see more use.....a lot more!!

I like the SAR5 over the SAR4. Very functional design even if the handle is a bit thick. The SAR5 is a lot of blade for the weight/size.

I have not handled the SAR4, but I KNOW I prefer the SAR5.

I do NOT like the small useless choil on the SAR4.

The SAR5 would be a LOT better with some size and weight reduction to the handle.

But, to each their own.

I like the Sar-5...nice knife. I just got one in a trade, sage blade.

Don't mean to hyjack this thread, but did the Sar-5 ever come with a competition or uncoated blade from the factory? Thx

No. . . .

Prefer the SAR5. My only one left is a black/orange with the green handle. It would kill me to sand down the handles and get rid of that patterning. . . but it really needs it. B/c otherwise it's a great knife.

Dangit. I convinced myself to keep it. ROTFL! (I was thinking of selling it.)

Better - found a pouch sheath for some other blade (PD? Nah, something bitter. I forget.) that works perfect for it.

I really like the SAR5 for that sized knife. The only thing that I did not like was how the handle is shaped to force your hand towards the edge, for which there is no protection. I solved this by putting on a leather D-guard made by Chuddy Bear and it's perfect now.

Sar5 is the bomb. Probably the most blade for the $$ that Busse has offered. I had a sar4LE, but it just didn't work for me at all. It is a bit odd, with the handle being larger than the blade. I guess that would be OK if I had a hand large enough to palm a basketball... but I don't. ;)

BTW... if the handle is too thick for you on the SAR5, you can sand it down very easily. I'm assuming yours is micarta... since you said it was a sage blade. Sage was only offered with tan micarta handles in my recollection.

I don't have either, but if I had to choose, I would buy the sar 5 over the sar 4 - I hate useless sharpening choils, and am not a fan of choils on small knives in general.

The Vex, with a similar design to the sar 5, is my favorite EDC sized knife for good reason. No wasted space for guards and choils and whatnot.

I like the SAR4 more personally. The vex like the SAR5 has no "guard" which is important to me.

I take that to mean you prefer a guard. And you are implying neither the SAR5 or Vex have a functional guard.

I will disagree.

While neither have a conventional guard, both have a functional and effective guard from the shape of the blade helping to prevent fingers from sliding forward.

The both offer "Secure" and reasonably safe grips.

Some guards do offer more safety - if that is what you need. But, I wouldn't say either the Vex or SAR5 are guardless by my definition. They just provide "Guard-like functions" differently.

.

I had the SAR5 and sold it, but I regretted...
I just haven't had the energy to do some modifications on it...but I understand your points a SAR being a "guardless knife with a guard"...:)
What bothered me, is the big handle(one can sand it down-true), and that the edge begins right at your hand. It should be a small (I really do not know what it calls...:o) "pause"- edgeless part - between yer hands and the edge. than it would be perfect...I really like the modification what was done by CS for a BFmember (someone could dig the pics up, maybe).
The SAR4 really doesn't "need" that useless choil...

I just got a SAR5 in a trade, and I love that knife!! Although I find myself eyeing up the Sarsquatch lately. That thing is ugly as hell, but the more I look, the more I like it...
