I was finally able to get out during some nice weather and put the SAR 8 to work.
I put it up against my NMFBM to test its chopping ability.
First I found a standing dead tree and used the SAR 8 on it. I didn't count the number of swings but when I was done I had a little hand fatigue. The handle seemed a little narrow for hard chopping.
This knife may have to go to the Spa for some liners to thicken the handle for me
I then took the NMFBM to the same tree. The NMFBM got me through in about half the time and no discomfort to the hand. What a chopper
I then found a grape vine and did one swing to see how far each blade would cut. It took a second swing on the SAR 8 for it to stick. Once again the NMFBM wins but the SAR 8 didn't do to bad.
Unfortunately I wasn't out in the woods for a long time but it was long enough to see how the SAR 8 works as a chopper. Obviously the NMFBM is a great chopper and I use it almost daily at work to clear brush and tree limbs. The SAR 8 will, however, do what you need it to do for the larger tasks. The satin finish cleaned right up with a damp cloth and you really can't tell that it was used.
I will be battoning with it this weekend at the NE Ohio Busse Boys Chop-In and Hot Dog Roast and let some others play with it and see what they think.
The SAR 8 does slice bread very well.
Sourdough bread and venison chili
