I have a friend that is a volunteer for the local Search and Rescue team. One of my first designs was for him to use in his duties there. On occasion he sends some business my way. One of his superiors contacted me and asked for a "Small Bird and Trout". His request was OAL: 7" Blade: 3.5"

I drew up a few designs that met his criteria

After a few back and forth emails this is what we came up with...

Specs:
Steel: Aldo's 1/8" 1080
OAL: 7"
Blade: 3.5"
Handle: Ironwood Burl
Sheath: Will be getting Dabling Kydex that can be worn as a necker or use a sm. tek lok
Misc: Tapered Tang

I have fairly large hands which makes it look smaller than it actually is ;)

Thanks Xander... What would you change to make it "Perfect"?

There are a few things I would change, some in the design some in my work!

For me I would lose the abrupt recurve at the heel of the blade, shapening that on a flat stone will be a pain, take the edge all the way back off the end, too. I also like a smooth round spine, or soft swedge for seperating flesh from hide. Also I still haven't received it in the mail yet....;)

Beautiful work, Ryan. I agree woth Xander on the recurve at the end of the blade. Otherwise it is most excellent!

Looks like a handy little knife to me Ryan, and you know I'm a sucker for IW burl! I like the look of the blade shape, but have a small kitchen knife that is similar and it does make it tough to sharpen.

Thanks for the replies... I agree with you all on the point/recurve, that was his addition. The only advantage I can see with it is if used as a bird and trout it would be nice to use that to cut as you slide the blade up on the initial cut. I would have preferred to go with my first drawing shown above. Looking back on it I should have taken the edge off the end by the fingers.
