Bubbathud, if you are talking about the little round rod with the wood handle attached to the sheath, it is a ferro rod, or fire steel. It is a firestarter that throws lots of very hot sparks when scraped with a sharp angled piece of metal- like a piece of hack saw blade or the spine of a knife (if the spine is not rounded or coated).
