well, here's the SAR5 I spoke of, finally buckled down and made some progress

stripped & mirror polished
shortened & contoured handle
skeletonized protruding tang
full convexed zero edge
& reworked swedge

This baby feels like a totally different knife, lighter, better balanced and fills the hand much nicer.

Not completely done yet though, leaving the final handle shaping until I get some stainless tubes to permanently attach the slabs (any donors?:D) so I can get them perfectly flush with the tang.

So Hogs, what do ya think, seal of approval? Any new found appreciation for the SAR5?

Looks great and I'm sure it feels much better, but still not floating my boat. Congrats anyway, you've done amazing work.

Very nice!! I'm all about the SAR5.

I think it's in the same class as the SJ and BAIII, but for a fraction of the price. You can buy them all day long right now for $275

Excellent work on the SAR. You have made many mods I would also make. I am not into that much of a mirror finish personally. I prefer a good satin. But, I still think you did a good job.

Making the handle smaller and lighter with a better fit for my hand, full convex and satin finish would be for me. With those mods, I believe the SAR5 would rock!

Nice work, WhiskeyJack!

I was wondering...what kind of handle rivets are those, and where do you buy them? Do they fit well; or did you have do do alterations on the handle or holes? How do they affect the feel of the handle?

Thanks!

Great work! I think that your on the right track with the skeleton tang and balance. Looks like it would make a great survival/all-round camp knife.

What size tubing (and wall thickness) and what size bolts did you used?

Cheers mate!

Thanks guys

The bolts are just run of the mill corby (is that the term?) bolts, these particular ones came off a different knife. The walls are 1/4".

I'm dieing to know how much weight was cut, I guess I'll have to take it to the post office with me next time. Anyone know what the stock SAR5's weigh?

I'd weigh mine, but it's G-10 so I think it would be heavier than the Micarta to start with.

I think thinning out the handles a bit and doing them skeletonizing cuts would change the balance sufficiently in ANY handled SAR. Wow!
