In looking at the stats for each, they appear to be the same thickness and blade length...the BATAC is a bit longer in the handle.

Anyone who owns both: is the functionality of the two the same? I mean, I'll definitely own one of each eventually; but for now, which is the more functional knife? Or would they cover the same bases?

Thanks!

What is your intended use?

I'd buy whichever one I could find first for a decent price !

.

Here is a comparison pic. You are right, they are both very similar.

The SAR5 has a bit more 'usable' edge due to the lack of choil. However, if you are using the knife for skinning or processing animals, the choil is a very helpful feature allowing you to 'choke-up' on the knife to do some fine work. The lack of choil on the SAR5 also makes it a more compact package due to the reduction of overall length vs. the BATAC.

I must say that my vote goes to... BOTH! They are both great. The only real negative I could point out would be that the G10 SAR5 is a bit handle-heavy. Not a problem at all with the micarta version.

Hope this helps...

If it were my choice I'd go with a BATAC LE, what an awesome knife - and I like the fact that it's way thicker too!

For me I like the slightly angled cant of the blade of the SAR5. When held in hand, the edge is slightly forward giving it a more aggressive cut. Of the two, I prefer the SAR5.

BATAC all the way, IMO. The TAC handles are much more usefull in allowing to choke up for fine work or gripping far back for chopping.

I don't like the round fat hamer grips on the SAR5 or the lack of a finger guard.

Thats JMHO, many will feel differant. Busse just makes to many dang knives don't they:p

Hey... found a pic with a comparison of that one also (BATACLE), along with an old school SJ. Hope it helps.

Id take a BATAC over a SAR5 for most the tasks I need it for. The BATAC feels better in hand also. I am thinking of having Ban mod my SAR5 like the last one he did.

I dont have a SAR5 but i do have a BATATC CG and it it freaking awsome. i dont like any knife with a heavier handle then blade**** if this is going to be a ALL around knife (including heavy chopping) then get a BATAC these things chope like a 7 in blade!

but if i were to get a SAR and your fingers can get so close to the blade with out the choil, i would get G10 even though it is lighter blade to handle because then you have a very precice tool and it would be very good at small stuff, but just get a small knife if you want that :D

The functionality is not the same. They are similar in length, but the SAR was created with a very specific use in mind. It was made for people who want to have a tough-as-nails knife they can also use for very fine woodworking...thus the name SAR (search and rescue). The knife was designed with a LOT of input by SAR guys all over the northwest, and it is (if I'm not mistaken) the first Busse in a VERY long time to NOT have a choil. That's not to say that the SAR won't be great at lots of other things, but if you're looking for a more all-around type of knife you might want to lean more toward the BATAC, in any of it's various forms.

You could also look into the ASH if you're wanting something more geared toward chopping. I would say this, though: if you get a CG ASH, be careful to think hard about whether to get mag (oversized) handles or standards. The CG ASH is .31" in thickness, and if you have small hands, the mags will make it a VERY thick knife.

Thanks, guys! I'll certainly get both, eventually; I'm just focusing on a BATAC first.

(I think...!)

SAR5 is GREAT for Modding....
