Today I received a package from Sarge containing the Sgian Dubh and a "little kitchen knife for my wife." Let me tell you that when Sarge calls himself an amateur he is being modest to say the least! Both knives are beautiful! They both feel very solid and the blades are perfectly formed and razor sharp. Both have antler handles, and the Sgian Dubh has a brass bolster. Let me impress on you that neither of these knives would be picked out of a lineup as the "homemade knives." Sarge's words. Both knives were shipped with beautiful leather scabbards and the Sgian has an R and an arrow embellished onto it. WOW!!! I am speechless!

I will take this opportunity to thank Sarge for his work. If this is just a hobby then your a top notch hobbist! Steely said it best when he said you are a class act.;)

Thanks again,

Andy:D :D :D :D :D :D

We really missed Sarge while he was away. As Bill said, "One of the good guys"

Glad you like the knives Andy,
That capital R shooting an arrow is my Robert of Yorkshire maker's mark. It's floating around here all over the place on knives, longbows, and such.

Now you see why I like sgian dubhs, slip it in your pocket, tuck it in your sock, it's never a bother and always ready. Little knives aren't impressive or glamorous, but they are what people themselves should strive to be, handy and useful. :D

I must say you are an advanced craftsman compared to myself. I hope you like the simple little project I put together for you. Its an order of magnitude more "amateur" than yours. I'm hoping to refine the design and see if Steve would like to sell some for Ram's fund. So I'd like your feedback. Unfortunately during my youth I was dumb, and woodworking bored me, so I didn't make use of the several true master furniture makers in the family. Nowadays when I visit those areas I go through their shop taking notes on jigs and tool placement. Sometimes my kinfolk try to give me things in those shops, but I refuse to move any of it for fear of destroying the reference. I'm not frustrated with my skill level, time cures all, I just wanted to warn you so you're not disapointed.

Where have all the good guys gone?? Why to the the Himalayan Imports Cantina, of course:D
This place gives me the warm fuzzies each and every day.

Yeah...we need someone here to learn to knit...

The warm fuzzies AND the dust bunnies got eaten in Cog's "gross food" thread.

Sarge,

My three year old daughter saw your knife last night and thought it was just perfect for her. She asked if I had gotten it for her right away. I told her no, of course, and that she couldn't have knves till she was older. She told me she really liked all my knives and that she wanted one just like that someday. (I'm glad I keep them secured!) So I just thought you might like a compliment from someone who doesn't know to filter herself yet. What she says is honest and from the heart. She was right too, its a sweetie.:D

Andy,
Little children are fast learners, by the time my daughter was four I'd already taught her quite a bit about the dangerous things around the house. She grew up understanding that such things as knives, guns, axes, matches, et cetera, et cetera, are tools not toys. She's grown and going to college now, even has a fiance', but she still loves her knives (and her broadsword and battle axe :D ), and takes pride in knowing how to use them properly. Her first knife wasn't a toy, it was the real deal, except I'd very meticulously rounded off the edge and the point to a high polish. Oh it would still "cut", at least enough to cut a peanut butter sandwich in half, or slice up bananas for a bowl of cereal, in fact, those are some of the things she learned and practiced on.

Make your daughter a "safe knife", teach her to respect it, use it, maintain it, and safely store it. By the time you feel she's ready for her first sharp one, she'll already be miles ahead of a lot of so called "grown ups". ;)

What Andy DIDN'T say was that Sarge also sent his hand-made sheaths for each of the knives...beautifully done.

Neat guy, that Thumbcutter Goodbeard.

I should have known he would do that. My offer of a Kismet-made bugly sheath was dumb. Nice enough, but dumb. Hope Thumbcutter wasn't offended.

duh.

If I should ever get offended by the goodwill and generosity of folks like you Kis, I need to be flogged, keel-hauled, and made to walk the plank. Arrrr, that's gonna leave a mark.

Sarge

Pretty is as pretty does, Kis. I have one of them thar sheathes, and it's holding up great. All it needed was a little color;) Functions just fine and gave me some pointers on sheath making. It gave me the nudge i needed to try some experimentations in leather.

Unn--uhhhh, Jake...nosirreebob.

I AM NOT taking responsibility for your downward spiral into "leather experimentation."

Indiana kink...sheez...whoda thunk it?

I was gonna say something, but i think the hole would just be dug deeper:D

Good one, Kis. That one made rootbeer shoot out of my nose, and i'm not even drinking rootbeer. How the heck you'd do that?

Kismet I hope I didn't offend you today. I did mention the scabbards in the original post of this thread. I was very thankful of your offer of a dangler sheath, but didn't want to take advantage of the generosity of this forum. I think your sheaths, at least the pic you sent me, are great. Additionally I, like steely, would like to do some experimenting with amatu-sarkiism. Please forgive my offish manners, and know that I wont blame you for my scabbard building frustrations.

Andy

Naw, Andy..

I missed the mention of scabbords.

I know the level of my skill. Utilitarian. I just wanted folks to see how generous Thumbcutter is. Having missed the mention, I thought it was news.

duh. once again.

Not to derail yet another thread, but I have one of Kismet's sheaths and I haven't been able to break it yet.

Make what you will of that. I think the man's being modest.

My point exactly. Day in and day out, on my belt, and slipped in my back pocket it's a tough 'un that hasn't worn out being carried pretty much everyday all day.
