I just finished reading the SAS Fighting Techniques handbook. I really enjoyed it and thought id post up a review.....
Its 416 pages long, so its not the smallest book, but its well wrote, and easy to follow. Overall its a really informative text. Its written by Terry White, a former British Forces Commando.
Topics include
-Survival, Resistance, and Escape techniques
-using the sun to determine time and location
-personal camoflage
-reading footprints in the field
-recon techniques for all enviroments
-Essentials of a survival pack
-finding adequate food and shelter in hostile enviroments
-avoiding being tracked by man and dog
-land nav with and without compass during day or night
All info might not be applicable to the civilian; such as mission planning, insertion behind enemy lines, making contact with the enemy, bodyguarding, abduction, communications etc.. However buried within those topics is some really good information. Setting up mechanical ambush, OPs, intellegence gathering, counter intellegance, clearing rooms, etc...Demolition topics cover shape charges, identifying structural weakness boobytraps etc...
The bodyguarding section has some great stuff on identifying threats, and evaluating weakness in security and peremeter.
One particularly interesting topic is the training of indigenous forces. It outlines the US Special Forces 30 day Master Program, which is a program to turn ordinary people into an effective, capable fighting force.
My favorite section was the tracking and land nav section. It uses the Mils system, but there is good stuff on identifing ground and top sign, reading footprints to determine direction of travel, size of group, load they are carrying etc. Counter tracking is also addressed, avoiding tracking, etc...
Overall its a great read. Its good information that might not be imeadiatly usefull, but could be adapted to a SHTF scenario...
