SATA Hard Drives?

Evidently, the SATA hard drive on the computer I had built last year is fried. Western Digital 120 gig is what I had. Now, it seems I need a new hard drive. What brand would you computer geeks recommend? As you can imagine, I'm having a hard time leaning towards WD again, after this one only went about a year before going out. Hitachi? Seagate? Maxtor?

you can not go wrong with seagate, I've never had a problem with one of their drives and, unless things have changed, they offer the longest warranty in the industry.

If you want uber free space hitachi makes a 400gig drive.

I've also heard that maxtor has come a long way in the last few years, bigger mem caches and better quality control. I'd still go with the seagate though!

I've been using 2 80GB Seagates in my desktop for the past 2 years without any problems. I can't comment on the Maxtor internal drives but judging by the quality of their network storage drives I would have to say they should be about the same.

Tiger Direct has a 160 gig SATA hard drive listed for $99. I think Seagate, Maxtor and Hitachi are all about the same price.

www.newegg.com has sata and sata 2 hard drives from 56.00 to 120.00. when I buy hard drives I buy western digital and maxtor, last western digital I had that went bad the manufacturer replaced for free to include my shipping cost.

Save your money and get a replacement under warranty if you can.

I don't really like WD drives because of the hokey tranlation software on the older drives when DOS/Windows didn't support large drives.

Maxtor has served me well.

For speed, it's impossible to beat Western Digital Raptors in a RAID array without going SCSI. They're also rated to last for a longer time and have a longer warranty compared to Western Digital's other SATA drives.

However I know you aren't into Western Digital. So I would recommend the Seagate Barracuda drives to you. I've had good luck with them - fast, fairly quiet and reliable.

I still recommend a RAID array if the motherboard supports it. If you use RAID 1, you get some speed increase and mirroring. If one drive dies you can pop in another and not loose any data.

Exactly.

Call WD directly and tell them it quit. They should give you their address to send yours in, and they will send you a new one.

Best warranty on HD's that I've seen.
