In the components for homemade forges I keep hearing the word Satanite. What is it? Where do I get it and whats the average price?

Satanite is a type of refractory cement made by D.P. Greene. It is available, or can be ordered from, anyone who deals in refractory or fire bricks. It can be used to coat Kao wool to stabalize it and according to Don Fogg it makes an excellent "clay" coating for Japanese style heat treating to achieve a temper line. I am anxious to try this, but I have not researched the cost yet. Hopoe thi helps.

Gary, and Sammy, I have used this material to cast several forge linings in my few years making blades.

It is not that expensive, that is if you can find it in your area, when I checked it was only about $35 for a 50 pound bag, but then to ship it was another $75....

Make sure when you buy it that you get a non aluminum containing mixture and that you get a temperature rating equal or greater than you want to be able to take the forge/furnace up to.

It's good stuff, if you need any casting tips or ideas on building a forge from it email me or post here and I will try my hardest to help ya out..
