I got a Really scratched up Camillus CQB1 from a friend. I got all the scratches out starting with fine emery cloth and moveing all the way up to 2000 grit wet/dry paper. it starts to get a mirror around 1500. ok, so I finished 2000 then used a dremel and jewlers rouge to buff out the marks left by the 2000. Now I got a mirror finish. I don't like it. it looks like a toy. So how do I get a regular satin finish. I have lots of knives with satin finishes that aren't nearly as shinny and mirrored, but the have no sanding marks. So how does the factory get a less shiny satin finish without leaving marks.2000 grit leaves marks. I have an untouched CQB1. it isn't close to as shiny and mirrored as the other one is with just 1500 ,but it still has no sand lines. so how do I get it like the factory CQB1, or any other satin finished less shinny knife??

I've always had good results with a fine scotchbrite wheel or belt. The wheels can be pricey, but they last forever.

Most satin blades are sandblasted, or bead blasted.

Whats scotchbrite?

An abrasive made my 3M that comes in many forms. One version of it is sold in supermarkets for scrubbing pots (those little, stiff, green, scratchy, sponge-like squares that are about 1/4" thick)... these are abrasive enough to soften the scratches from sandpaper and leave a more satin finish.

If you have sanding lines at 1500 grit, you didn't do enough sanding with the heavier grits. Go back to 400 grit and sand in a different direction until all the marks go in the new direction. Then use 600 in another direction. Then 1000, etc. etc.
A high polished blade does not look like a toy. It shows superior workmanship and finishing care. The knives you refer to with satin blades are finished with production in mind.
The Scotchbrite pads will still leave scratches in your blade. They will just be blended in a little better. What I believe you want is a bead-blasted finish. (still a cheap way to finish a blade.)
