For many of you this is old rehashed news, but to relatively new guys like me it is a wake up call.

You get to what you think is a 1200 grit finish from the platen and start your satin finish. 3-4 strokes later and the Goblins appear. Those deep scratches you swore were gone, magically Re-appear.

In my case the culprit was my Platen. I noticed the deep scratches appeared to reflect the grooves that had worn into the platen. Cleaned up the platen on the disc. Hopefully this will take care of it. I am now using fresh belts for each blade and that has helped tremendously!

I also figured out that keeping the Divets out of my flat grind is alot easier if I pull straight back after a pass, rather than pulling the blade back on an angle to inspect your last pass on the grinder. DUH...

I have been 'testing' this cork belt with buff compound for the last dozen or so blades I've ground. I'm convinced it works well and will save belt expense. It also seems to be a bit faster than progressing through grits. After the 400belt/compound, I am trying a 600cork belt with 800-900grit compound for additional clean up. Too early at this point to offer any kind of opinion.
I haven't gotten any back from heat treat to finalize yet so I will have to see how that comes out. On the other hand, if its good enough for SJohnson, it's more than good enough for me.
