Satin finish?

How stain-resistant are the satin finish/double cut blades? I know infi isn't technically stainless, but I wan't a SAR4 for use, and I'm concerned about rust, does anyone have one that they use/abuse who can attest to their rust-freeness? Thanks

Like any blades, I would take care of it, wipe it down when done and store with a bit of oil or whatnot. I use WD40 or I have been told mineral oil is good. I mean if you are going to pay that much for a blade, why not take care of it.

The only staining I've gotten on the few satin infi blades I own is from leaving stuff like tree sap on them. A little metal polish takes it out but who cares really. I hit my SR-101 blades with a tuff cloth once in a while, but don't really even bother on INFI.

Satin finished infi is at least as stain resistant as ats-34. Unlike ats-34 any rust will be limited to a fine surface film, and can usually be wiped off with an oily rag. After a few flitz polishes to smooth the surface a bit it will likely never rust in normal use.

Wipe a little Breakfree CLP on your SAR4 once in a while and you'll never have to worry about rust. I use it on Busse's with competition finish (which rust if you look at them sideways) and they never rust.

Any knife looked after will not rust....staining from sap or tanin in bark just needs cleaning...you won't have any problems if you do this:thumbup:

seriously, unless you live in a very salty humid environment, you don't have to do anything.

I never oil any of my naked infi. I have even chopped a bunch of branches/bushes, fire wood, and put it away dirty with sap on it, still no rust.

I got it wet and washed it off once, and left it to air dry on the counter while I was doing something (forgot it there). It got some almost invisible water spots, but no rust at all. No darkening what so ever. Next time I chopped with it, they were gone.

The only exception would be the comp finishes. Then you gotta keep them oiled, or actually hit them lightly with buffer, or sand paper to take that decarb layer off.

Even my stripped infi gets no oiling at all.

That said, I have seen light rust fingerprints on neked infi, in coastal environments (pics only). Some in those types of environments do say they have to keep something on the blade to avoid staining etc.

I've used a naked Cultie in my kitchen almost daily for over a year now, and done some really terrible things to it, I confess! And you know what? You'd never know it wasn't new. Looks great, still sharp, and with the micarta oiled up (mineral oil) it still looks as good as the day I got it.
