what is the best way to achieve a satin finish on stainless? I am new to knifemaking and find the website very helpful and inspiring.

Thanks to all who read and reply!

The best way is hand sanding using progressively finer grits of sandpaper.I go up to 800 grit and then back down to 600.

Welcome to bladeforums!

Progressively finer grits of sandpaper until you get the results you want. Belt sanders do the job much faster, but you need to be careful that you don't overheat the blade and ruin the heat treatment.

I've never used belt sanders, but I've given a satin polish to several of the blades I own by using sandpaper and doing it by hand.
