Satin finishing a hollow grind

Anyone have any tips on satin finishing a hollow ground hunter?

I ground the bevels with a 60 grit, followed by a 120 grit and ending with a 220 grit belt.

Any recommendations for finishing after heat treat?

I'm looking for the simplest way (and most cost effective) to produce an even satin finish.

Thanks!

Use a 3M ScotchBrite belt. They come in three different grades.Green = 220,Blue = 320, Grey = 600.Use the same contact wheel you used to do the hollow grind.

I don't do many satin finish Blades. One thing that helps speed my finishing up , and it will work with any final Blade finish, is to get the absolute best finish on the Blade that you can BEFORE Heat Treat. It is sooo much easier & faster to finish a Blade that is in the annealed state than one that is 58-60 RC. As long as you make a good foil pack or use PBC the Blade comes out like you put it in , except for the rainbow color effect, which is no problem to finish off.

That's what I do for a satin finish.

David,
This may be a silly question, but do you do this for non-stainless knives, too? I get the impression that makers only ever use foil for HTing stainless steels.
But if it would save all the finish sanding, it would be definitely be worth the trouble to use it on plain 'ol carbon steels.

Am I just missing something?

Thanks
Mike

Mike , you didn't miss anything :) Foil for S.S. and PBC for Carbon Steel Blades that are Oil/Water Quench. I have excellent results using PBC , I finish to 320 prior to Heat Treat and as long as I do a good job of coating the Blade it comes out as pretty as it went in. There are quite a few threads on PBC if you're not familiar with it. It is a huge time saver and I couldn't do without it. I have heard guys say they use foil for 10XX steels and I don't know how they get the Blades out of the foil fast enough for quench , seeing how you have mere seconds (or less) to get your Blade to quench. Sorry to O.T. this thread .

So what's to keep you from quenching your 10xx blade in oil while it's still wrapped in foil?

Should I start a new thread for this?

Thanks,
Mike

Thanks for the replies!

What is the lowest grit you can use for a satin finish using a Scotchbrite belt? Does the 220 grit (green) belt work out okay? Or should I finish with the 320 grit (blue) belt? I'm looking for a Dozier-like finish.

Also, how long do the scotchbrite belts last? They seem pretty pricey $10 a belt!!

The blue belt is my final finish. I also load it with white buffing compound. The belts last a pretty long time. You'll know when they wear by how thin they get.
