I decided recently to take on some general maintenance work of my EDC blades. I had a thought to “disappear” some aesthetic surface scratches by attempting my own rudimentary satin finishing job.
I used a series of sandpaper, 100-150-220-320 grits. Then I fixed the sandpaper on a table and scrubbed the blade in edge-spine-edge direction.
I was able to accomplish my purpose. But I caused myself a problem that kept me from moving past the first knife. After the sanding, I sharpened. When I sharpened, I realized that I sanded a convex into one side of my edge. The shoulder of the bevel on the other side was eroded but I got that redefined after sharpening. The cause of the convexing is relatively easy to identify, and this was a risk I considered when I planned the project.
Even though I think I could achieve desired results if I try this method again, I am reconsidering my approach before doing so.
I use Flitz with 000 steel wool and/or Mother’s polish on my work knives to remove patina/rust and sharpening scrubs. But I’ve not dealt with deeper scratches like on my EDC in the past; I’ve just lived with it.
I’d love to know a solid approach to texture finish some of my blades, both work and EDC. I’m a huge fan of the way a polished bevel contrasts against surface texture.
Anyone willing to suggest a better approach? Most especially a method I can do myself?
