Hello guys. This is my first post here in the Busse forum as I am usually hanging out w/ my Rat buddies. :D Now before you bare your tusks hear me out. I have recently been bitten by the INFINI bug though no official purchase as of yet. I am not a colector so I am looking for a blade for useage.

I really like the SJT currently on the company store. But I also have my eye on an original SJ model as well. Can any one tell me the differences between the two? Especially those regarding usage and performance. I see that the handles are different but what else?

Sorry if this has already been discussed here but I searched the archives and couldn't find a comparison between the two. Thanks!

I can't say as to the differences, because I don't own an original SJ. As to the SJT, I can't believe a better all purpose knife exists IMHO. It fits the hand in so many positions and it is a very fast knife. I have been giving both of mine a workout in hacking up to 1" limbs and multiple cutting tasks on our property. I have even hit some rocks, the miniscule knicks strop out easily. The tip is not truly a pronounced drop point but I believe it will skin easily. I hope to test that soon. Not much for comparison, but I thought I'd offer my $.02.

to me they are like two totally different knives. though they share the same name and may be about the same length, that are very different in shape weight, feel, blade and handle geometry.

I am on the other end and have the "old style" SJ and absolutely love it. It is a 3/16" version and I beleive Walking Man descibied it as a souped up ka-bar....and I think that it fits it well.

Correct me if I am wrong, but AFAIK the SJ Tac has a wider blade and a full convex primary grind- so this should make it a better slicer? Maybe?

I cant speak for the SJ tac as yet, as I only ordered it last week.

IMO, going from the pictures on the company store site I recon the SJ tac will be a better general purpose bush knife. And will make a better skinner than the original SJ.

The old SJ I believe was more designed as a general purpose knife with the emphasis on urban use.

Ian.

Ian, or anyone else:

I understand somewhat what the various chores are for a bush knife but what exactly is "urban use" and what tasks are included?

Thanks for the replies guys.

Skunk, where is this fabled "ripper" until I see pics... I guess I'll... I'll...

wait 2 more weeks. :p

I love it when people quote me. :D
Yes, I did say it's the closest thing to a Kabar that Jerry has to offer. I really like the old model because the handle is thinner than most.
IMO, every knife company should have some version of a knife like a Kabar.
Why? because it's a great size for both utilitarian and SD
Most already do:
Randall - Duh.
BM - Nimravus
Buck - General
Reeve - Green Beret
Timberline - Pitbull, Specwar
Kershaw - Military
Gerber - Silver Trident
SOG - more than one
MOD - a couple of models
etc. etc.

Ok I'll quote you "This in no way shape or form addesses the original question. Sir, you are confusing me. Perhaps a bunny with a pancake on it's head would have been a more meaningful answer." :p

I concur. They share the name and that is about it. :D Both are great knives, but for me, I really like the fit and feel of the TAC handle. Makes it feel a lot more secure in several positions. To each his own. They are great general purpose blades and I have also said in the past that this is what the KaBar wishes it was.

That was a good day. :D

Now I see how you guys get into the "just get both" mentality. Well from the feedback so far it looks like I can't go wrong w/ either blade. Thanks guys.

Now to decide. Does Busse ever hit Southern California knife shows? :D

.

I can't believe you said that man.

I had a Timberline Specwar. I paid about 300 for it then. It was the toughest knife I ever had back then. I use to beat it up because it was so ugly it deserved it. But it never broke. I didn't like it at the time because it was ugly but it worked well and I couldn't destroy it, so I gave it to a buddy of mine who hated seeing it abused. So some flagship knives are good inspite of their looks

BUT, there's something else you have to see:

It's funny!
