Hello,

Well, I'm finally going to do it. I'm going to buy my first Busse. I figure that the Satin Jack will fit my needs the most, and its the one I like the best as well. Since this will be my first, to be ordered at the latest November, what am I to expect? How does the whole process work? Do I have any options other than the standard SJ CG? I really like the LE, but can't afford to pay that much. Can I get a SJ CG without the coating? Anyways, if you have any input on the Satin Jack, or would rather try to convince me to purchase the NO, please let me know. Thanks,

Nick

The new Satin Jacks are 3/16ths" whereas the NO is full 1/4" stock. While these two models are among my favorites, it really depends on what you plan to do with the knife. The NO/E is a tough digging, prying beater of a knife while the SJ seems to fit more general duty profiles. It is thinner and therefore slices better and has more aspect ratio (height to length) which I also believe lends itself to more food prep and other camp related chores that a knife commonly sees.

Get the SJ and then a Steel Heart.:D

Nick,
I agree with Nimrod, for light work like food prep, get the
3/16th SJ. For a beater chopper, get the NO.

Sounds like you already made your mind up!!;) :D

As far as what u can get done to the Sj...anything u want...all u have to is specify when u order, and they can do it...for a price of course...And it might take a little longer...

..For instance...when i get mine...Mine will be a CG but bead blasted, with a symetrical edge(ZT Edge...?), Busse logo and snake skin nucrata handles...Come to think of it, that all might cost more than an LE anyways...;) :D

always in truth...

Thanks for the replies guys. Can someone give me the technical terms for the differences between the LE and CG? I'm pretty sure the SJ is the knife for me because it will be a general camp knife. My brother told me (well, I caught him ordering it) that he is going to get the swamp rat Ratchet so I'm not concerned about chopping. I"m also afraid to say this here, but I have a BK9 on the way as well. I just want my main user knife to be a high quality knife that I know I can depend on. Anyways, thanks again,

Nick

Well, here's my definitions of the terms CG and LE(they might be wrong but this is my take on them)

Combat Grade I consider to be standard, no extras, it is the blade as produced from the Shop without anything special ordered. I would consider it CG if you just placed the order over the website. The only other thing I would consider CG was if you just upgraded the Micarta to another color or style.

Limited Edition is just that limited, these are produced in fewer numbers and you get some extra's. Satin finish, Symmetrical convex zero edge, etched logo, I believe they are numbered. Did I miss anything or add anything?(help me out guys)

You could also order a regular SJ with a satin finish, this would be more than the regular CG but wouldn't be as much as the LE.

Let us know what you decide.

BTW, from your earlier posts I think you've chosen well. :D:D

The only thing that Eric missed, I think is the CG comes
with a Canvas micarta handle and the LE comes with a paper micarta
handle. I think you can order it either way if you want.
I would get the SS nukarta myself.:D

So far its the Satin Jack CG with the satin finish. Does anyone have any other recomendations? Also, does anyone know a ballpark figure of how much the satin finish will increase the cost of the knife? Thanks again,

Nick

or you can buy the regular cg and use it hard, then send it back in a year or so and get a satin or bead finish put on it.

Thanks Chip ;):D I knew I was forgetting something. :D

Don't quote me on this but I think the Satin finish is somewhere in the $65 range. Idaho makes a good point, you may want to order it with the standard black, use it, then send it back for a refinish(satin or BB) job. :D:D

I like both knives, and have finally handled both together over the summer. Well, one of the old 1/4" SJ's anyways, lol The natural outlaw was always one of my favorites, but I've got to say that I'd take a 1/4" SJ any day, it just has so much to offer in a slimmer profile. Haven't handled a 3/16" SJ, but as a general result I'm never happy with fixed blades at 3/16", just a personal preference I've found over time. They probably perform 100% as well, but there is just something about the feel of 1/4" stock in your hand :)

I like that idea of sending it back in a year or so to get the different finish. Besides, just the standard CG will be easier on my check book. Does changing the handle cost anything? Thanks again,

Nick

I'd be inclined to, no matter what variation of Satin Jack you order, to ask for an especially thin edge on the blade. Even the 3/16" LE Satin Jack comes with a very thick edge for a knife that is sized for only limited chopping. A thinner edge would greatly improve the Satin Jack’s slicing ability for standard camp chores.

I’d hate to see you get in an SJ and a much less expensive Becker, and then end up using the Becker because it slices better.

For the SJ, I would probably go with a symmetrical flat grind, since it's going to be slicing rather than chopping. I've heard the BK9 is also a good knife, I've been tempted to get one for some time. I think that I hear a Swamp Rat talking first... :D

If the BK9 is anything like my Becker CU 7, the grind will be very obtuse. I had to reprofile my 7, it was just not getting the job done. IIRC, I took it down to about 35 deg total. I will probably end up thinning it out some more, I have to agree with Buzzbait, it sure does cut better when thin!
